Stated objective in 1986.. to have a continous overview of the spread of the disease in order to target preventive measures and plan resource needs.

Challenges of HIV surveillance The infection is often asymptomatic –Lab-diagnosis is required Strong need to protect individuals identity –Respect for risk groups Detailled data on transmission and demography are needed

Problem in Norway 1986 Laboratories are the main data source –Clinicians often forget to report Only clinicians have detailled information Gay community: Reports must be anonymous!

Case reporting is not enough Depends heavily on who is tested –No testing no reports no problem!!?? Solutions: –Keep up and measure testing numbers –Repeated prevalence measurements among pregnant women Rather representative of the whole population Tested anyway
