History of bicycles Do you like sports? What sports do you go in for? What sport are you good at? Are you fit and healthy? Do you have a bike? Would you like to have a bike like this? What for?
4
In 1493 Leonardo da Vinchi, the Italian painter and inventor, drew a picture of the first bicycle. However, it was never built, at that time, because people did not know how to build machine like this.
5
The first bicycles were built in the early 1800s. The rider had to move the bicycle along with his feet.
6
This bicycle, with one wheel much bigger than the other, was popular in 1870s. You had to put one foot on the step, push the bicycle forwards with your other foot on the ground, stand with both feet on the step and then jump up on the saddle. Hard job, was not it?
7
By the end of the 19 th century bicycles were beginning to look similar to those of today.
8
Strange bikes This swing bicycle was made in 1887. Two riders sat in a basket between two huge wheels.
9
How about trying to ride a unicycle – a bike with one wheel! It is difficult to balance on just one wheel. And without any handlebars it is difficult to turn. And without any brakes how do you stop?
10
A bike for two or more people is called a tandem. In 1989 three men rode this bike 8,046 kilometres across the USA from New York to California. The trip took 11 weeks.
11
Now have some rest and let someone else do the pedalling! Take a ride in this wonderful taxi from Bangladesh. It is called a rickshaw. You sit comfortably, protected from the sun or the rain. How happy you are!
12
If you want to become an Olympic cycling champion, you certainly need a racing bike like this. It is one of the fastest bikes in the world. Good luck!

Have fun !
