3 SRAM Corporation Founded in 1987 to design and manufacture bicycle components. Markets: Road Racing, Mountain Biking, Triathlon, Pavement/commuting. Largest in USA, second largest in the world. Primarily high-end markets.

4 ORIGIN ORIGIN Disaster Relief: 24,400 bicycles SRAM Corporation founded World Bicycle Relief in 2005 immediately following the Indian Ocean Tsunami. Bicycles were granted to selected Sri Lankan families to help them regain their independence and livelihood. 16,000 adult bikes and 8,000 students bikes distributed across 9 districts Commutes averaged 13km/day in most districts

5 RESULTS RESULTS Impact: Healthcare, Education, Development Year 2 results from independent evaluation in Sri Lanka: 88% still relied on bicycles for livelihood 79% of male students and 62% of female students used bicycles to travel to school 82% of women reported using bicycles for income 12.5 km/day: average distance traveled on bicycles

6 COMPREHENSIVE COMPREHENSIVE Sustainable & Scalable: Create a thriving economic engine. Design and sourcing of technologically appropriate bike. Set up assembly facilities in host countries. Field Mechanics: train and equip local mechanics. Put them in to business. Measurement by Independent, third party evaluators. Partner with Governments or Non Gov. Organizations on the ground.

7 HEALTHCARE Care, Testing, Treatment, Prevention of HIV/AIDS 23,000 bikes distributed 465 mechanics trained Patients served increased from 5/week to 10 - 20/week Healthcare worker retention rates rose from 50% to over 90%

8 EDUCATION EDUCATION There is no investment more effective for achieving development goals than educating girls.” The World Bank Goal: improve educational, health and economic outcomes for children in rural Sub Sahara Africa by providing 50,000 bicycles to students (70% girls), teachers and community leaders. 12,000 bicycles distributed, 150 field mechanics trained, grades & attendance rising. Teenage pregnancies decreasing.

9 MICROFINANCE MICROFINANCE In partnership with local lending Institutions Over 5,000 bicycles financed through lending to build local businesses Low default rates and unique product provide compelling offer for microfinance institutions Dairy farmers who purchased bikes saw productivity increases of 20%

10 MICROFINANCE MICROFINANCE Mobility = Market Access Joe started with one bike loan to help trade in goats and other pastoral animals. Now employs 4 people, owns 5 bicycles and a motorcycle. Purchased sewing machines and land for farming. Built buildings for rent, and retail. His children have graduated high school.

11 MICROFINANCE MICROFINANCE Mobility = Market Access Partnership with Microfinance Bank and Milk Collection Center Collection Center guarantees lone Deductions are taken from an individual’s weekly milk payments Collection Center production increases Farmer obtains high productivity asset for farm and family
