Bystander Actions You are a vital link between the emergency medical services(EMS) and the victim: Recognizing the emergency Deciding to help Calling 9-1-1 Checking the Victim Giving first aid

Recongnizing the Emergency catastrophic? Physical Distance- The closer a bystander is to an emergency situation the more likey they will notice it Relationship- increases likelihood of noticing an emergency Time Exposed- Evidence indicates the longer a bystander is aware of the situation the more likely he or she will notice the emergency

To Help or Not to Help Deciding to help is an attitude about emergencies and about one’s ability to deal with emergencies which is usually a result of: Appreciating the importance of help Feeling confident Be willing to help Feeling comfortable about taking charge 5. The bodily fluids

Why NOT Help? Could be harmful Helping doesn’t matter? Obstacles can prevent helping (swim, knowledge)

When Calling EMS Be Prepared to give the dispatcher the following information: Victim’s location Phone Number you are calling from and your name What happened Number of person’s needing attention Victim’s condition **Never hang up the phone until he dispatcher instructs you to do so

Scene Size-Up If you are at the scene of an emergency situation, do a 10 second scene size-up, looking for 3 things: Hazards that could be dangerous to you, the victim(s), or bystanders Cause of the injury or illness Number of victims
