Evolution of Advisory O 1 st Year (2011-2012) O 10 advisory sessions – 50 minutes each O Completely scripted lessons for ALL lessons O All materials provided for the teachers O 18-21 students per group O 2 nd Year (2012-2013) O 16 advisory sessions (twice per month, once in months with testing or vacation, no make-ups when school was closed due to storms) O Outlines for ALL advisory lessons with suggestions of what to say to the students O All materials provided for the teachers O Incoming Freshmen, 14-16 per group

Current Year’s Advisory O Advisory is held every Monday (34 sessions) O 32 minutes each O Some sessions are extended as necessary O All resources are available through the SSP website O Outlines are provided for each planned session with brief discussion prompts O Teachers e-mail the Advisory Coordinator if they need copies provided for them O Approximately 10 sessions are “Open” sessions O Teachers are provided “Expectations of Advisors during Weekly Advisory Sessions”

Social Hope O More frequent interactions with advisors O Focus on students’ strengths rather than overcoming weaknesses O Involvement in extra-curricular activities specifically related to interests and post- grad goals

Emotional Engagement O Help students understand the value of the work they are doing O Make connections to the real world O Give students opportunities to use their strengths everyday O Recognize students regularly, not just for academics

Physical Wellbeing O Discussions with students that are frequently absent due to health issues or are not physically able to do what students their age normally do O Encourage students to participate in a sport, intramural activity, or physical activity of some sort

Advisor Feedback O Avoid “Don’t do this” type advisory lessons O Group dynamics drive the success of the advisory group O What do we do with students that are not buying-in and undermine the progress of the group? O Advisors are finally able to learn the names of the students in their group with weekly sessions.
