Publishing your data There are roughly three ways to publish research data: –In a data archive as an independent object –As a description of a data set in a data paper / data journal –As a component in a web of relations, so called “Scientific Publication Package” (SPP)
3
Search Engines Data Archive descri ption Data object Publish as independent object Data Archive
4
Data Archive descri ption Data object Data Archive Publish in a Data Journal
5
Data Archive descri ption ‘data’ ‘contrib utor’ ‘article’ ‘measuring instrument’ Data object Data Archive Scientific Publication Package Publish as a Scientific Publication Package ‘author’ ‘video’

Data Journal An online-only journal, the Geoscience Data Journal, publishes short data papers cross-linked to, and citing, datasets that have been deposited in approved data centres. www.geosciencedata.com www.geosciencedata.com A data paper describes a dataset, giving details of its collection, processing, software, file formats etc, without the requirement of novel analyses or ground breaking conclusions. It allows the reader to understand the when, how and why data was collected and what the data-product is.

Data production methods 1. Data acquisition Specification of IDRA, (IRCTR Drizzle Radar) 2. Data processing polarimetric weather radar observables, i.e. differential reflectivity, linear depolarization ratio, and differential phase, and the Doppler moments, i.e. Doppler velocity and Doppler spectrum width are computed 3. Data storage data are processed in real-time and stored in binary format on hard disks placed in the basement of the Cabauw mast. Regularly, the hard disks are brought to Delft where the data are converted to NetCDF format.

Scientific Publication Package A SPP is a complex, composite digital object which encapsulates a variety of related heterogeneous components. Like: Pre-existing data, models, hypotheses or publications Large datasets generated from experiments, observations and instruments. These may include: numerical data, survey data, questionnaires, images, video, audio, maps, spectral data, real-time sensor data Experimental and instrumental conditions, settings and parametric ranges or constraints Assumptions made and criteria applied Formulas, rules, hypotheses, numerical models, mathematical functions Conceptual models - paradigmatic, explanatory information or ideas in the form of axioms, models and metaphors
15
Scientific Publication Package …continued… Software tools and services – that perform the analysis, interpretation, transformation, visualization, simulation and modelling of the data. This includes actual source code or executables, applets or links to web services as well as documentation describing the software Hardware specifications – the instruments used to generate the data, the instrumental settings, and the computers that execute the analysis, processing, integration and visualization of the data Workflows – steps involved in transforming the raw data into knowledge Visualizations – 2D, 3D imagery, graphs, tables, charts, diagrams, animations Source: Hunter, J. (2006). Scientific Publication Packages - a selective Approach to the Communication and Archival of Scientific Output. The International Journal of Digital Curation, 1 (1), 33-52
