“I will harden his heart” Pharaoh’s Rejection 10:27-28 Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart Pharaoh - Get out of my sight, make sure I do not see you again, if I do you will die! Moses – Just as you say, I will never appear before you again

“I will harden his heart” Gold and Silver Given 11:1-3 Lord had told Moses of one more plague After which Pharaoh would drive Israelites out completely Tell men and women alike to ask Egyptian neighbors for gold and silver Israelites were very favored among Egyptians and Moses was highly regarded by Egyptian officials and people

“I will harden his heart” Moses Warns of Death 11:4-10 Moses – About midnight the Lord will go throughout Egypt Every firstborn will die: – Son of Pharaoh – Son of the slave girl – Firstborn of cattle as well Loud wailing among Egypt; but among Israelites, not even a dog bark

“I will harden his heart” Moses Warns of Death (cont.) 11:4-10 You will know God makes a distinction between Egyptians and Israel All these Pharaoh’s officials will come to Moses bowing and telling the Israelites to go Moses, hot with anger, left Pharaoh Lord – Pharaoh will not heed you; His wonders will be multiplied in Egypt; but Pharaoh hardened his heart

Passover Instituted Instructions for Passover 12:1-1 Given to Moses and Aaron This month = 1 st month, 1 st of year 10 th day of month each man take a lamb for household; small household to share with neighbor Amount of lamb according to what will be eaten

Passover Instituted Instructions for Passover (cont.) 12:1-10 Year-old males without defect From sheep or goats Care for them until the 14 th day Slaughter at twilight Take blood and put on two posts and lintel of doorway where lamb is eaten

Passover Instituted Instructions for Passover (cont.) 12:1-10 Same night eat meat roasted over fire – With bitter herbs – And bread without leaven – Do not eat raw or boiled – Roast with head legs and entrails Leftovers to be burned and not eaten in the morning

Passover Instituted Instructions for Passover (cont.) 12:1-10 That same night Lord will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn – both men and animals I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt The blood will be a sign for you on your house – When I see the blood, I will pass over you

Passover Instituted An Annual Celebration 12:14-20 This day a memorial (a commemorative), a celebration and festival to the Lord; a lasting ordinance 7 days eat unleaven bread (without yeast) Remove yeast from the house If someone eats yeast, he is to be cut off

Passover Instituted Instructions Given 12:21-28 Moses summons elders Go, select lambs and slaughter Take a bunch of hyssop, dip in blood and put on doorposts and lintel of doorway No one to leave house until morning When the Lord passes over He will see the blood and not allow the destroyer to enter

Instructions Given (cont.) 12:21-28 Ceremony to be observed when the Israelites enter the promised land Be ready to answer the children’s questions about the Passover celebration The people bowed down and worshipped and did just what the Lord commanded

Let My People Go Pharaoh Lets Israel Go 12:29-32 At midnight God struck down the firstborn of Egypt (Pharaoh’s son, firstborn of prisoner and livestock) Pharaoh and officials awaken to loud wailing in Egypt Not a house without someone dead

Let My People Go Pharaoh Lets Israel Go (cont.) 12:29-32 During night Pharaoh calls for Moses and Aaron Up! Leave my people, you and the Israelites. Go worship God. Take your livestock Be gone, and bless me also

Let My People Go Egyptians Give Aid 12:33-36 Urged the Israelites to leave, otherwise “We shall all be dead” Israelites took dough before yeast was added, carried it in their kneading bowls wrapped in their clothes Asked Egyptians for gold and silver, given what they asked for; thus they plundered Egypt

Law of the Firstborn God Demands Firstborn 13:1-2 Lord said to Moses; Consecrate to Me every firstborn male among the Israelites, whether man or animal

Law of the Firstborn God Demands Firstborn (cont,) 13:11-16 After Lord brings you into Canaan and gives it to you… – You are to give over to the Lord the first-born males of both animals and man – All firstborn males of livestock are the Lord’s – Redeem a firstborn donkey with a lamb; if not break its’ neck – Redeem every firstborn among your sons

Law of the Firstborn God Demands Firstborn (cont,) 13:11-16 Later, when son asks you, “What does this mean?” – With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt a land of slavery – Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go – The Lord killed every firstborn in Egypt, man and animal – This is why I sacrifice first-born animals and redeem first- born son – A sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead (i.e., frontlets between your eyes)
