Syllabus What is that?? Every class will have one Sample SyllabusSample Syllabus Contract between faculty and students Goals for the course Lecture topics Reading and written assignments Grading Examinations—dates and times Faculty office hours How to contact the faculty and teaching assistants Most likely the syllabus will be posted on EEE not handed out in paper form

Faculty Office Hours Preparation Be on time!!! First come first served vs. appointment Be prepared with specific questions about the course Etiquette (What to do) Title: Professor or Dr. Let them see you’re there – wait for them to invite you in Tell them who you are – name, year, major Use the time wisely – get your questions answered

Academic Assistance Writing Assistance: Writing Center Tutoring (General or School-based): LARC Study Groups: Some classes will recommend or require them. How do you find a study group? Sometimes instructor forms them. Ask students sitting around you. If there is a chat room portion of the course on EEE, ask there.

Attendance Attendance: Some instructors pay attention to attendance; others do not. You may lose credit for not attending or for being late to class. What to do if you need to miss class. Find someone in class with whom you can exchange names and email as contact in case you or they need to miss class. Contact them for the notes for the class you missed If an emergency causes you to miss an assignment or an exam, email the professor as soon as you can and be prepared to show documentation for the problem.

My TA’s name is John Brown. I will miss class/exam next week because of a conflict with a mandatory performance off campus. I will bring confirmation from my instructor. How can I arrange a make up? Thank you, Sharon Salinger Address the faculty professionally. Use standard English Identify yourself and the course you have with this instructor

Participation Participation: Ask questions in class. Answer questions in class. Work in small groups. OK to take notes on laptop in class if instructor allows computers. TURN OFF CELL PHONES - NO USING CELL PHONES IN CLASS
