2  What is a social class?  What were social classes based on in ancient history? Today?  What is a hierarchy?  How were slaves acquired in ancient times? KNIGHT’S CHARGE

4  War has been around pretty much since recorded history began.  Early man battled over more tangible thing like, hunting grounds, water, and women… WAR

5  Early man battled using primitive, clubs, spears, and rocks…  Seriously? Could you imagine being hit by one of these…ouch WAR

6  City-States would fight over resources, land being the most important.  Having the most land means having more citizens…Why does this matter?  Well, More citizens = more taxes = more money = more workers = more soldiers = more WAR = MORE MONEY! WAR

7  Early man also came up with a new type of military technology:  The bow and arrow.  The Bow and arrow completely changes the face of war…how? WAR Archers change war…4:08 mark.

8  China was the first to excel at military technology!  Shi Huang Di would singlehandedly conquer all of the Chinese provinces.  He would create Legalism. He was also a jerk.  He would try to protect his new empire by creating a Great Wall!  He would also lead the Chinese to invent black powder (you know, for guns…and bombs…thanks China!) WAR

9  However, it was the Greeks and Romans who invented most of the early “effective” military tactics.  From Greece came the Spartans. Spartan life placed large value on military life and strength.  All Spartan children were inspected at birth to make sure that they would become good warriors.  Sadly, many times, those that had defects or other issues were literally, thrown down a cliff.  At the age of 7, Spartan BOYS began their military and educational training. WAR

10  Spartan boys learned and trained…naked!  The Boys were encouraged to steal from their officers to develop cunning and a sense of sneaking around. However, if they were caught, they would be severely publicly beaten. WAR

11  Iron – Made it cheaper to create weapons and armor so that all social classes could fight!  Phalanx – Advanced military tactic using spears where soldiers work together in one unit.  Phalanx Phalanx SPARTAN MILITARY ADVANCES

12  The Spartans would use these new tactics to win the Persian war.  The Battle of Thermopylae would allow greatly outnumbered Spartan forces, using the phalanx tactic, to overcome their numerical disadvantage.  300 300 SPARTAN WARFARE
