Let’s Name This CHURCH “the called out” “the church”
2
The Church is the Bride of Christ “Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another--to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.” Romans 7:4 If the church is married to Christ, what name should the church take?
3
The Church is the Body of Christ “I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church” Colossians 1:24 “And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body…” Ephesians 1:22-23 “And He is the head of the body, the church…” Colossians 1:18
4
Spiritual Blessings are in Christ “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,” Ephesians 1:3 If all members of the church must be in Christ to receive spiritual blessings, what should they name the church of which they are members?
5
All are Baptized into Christ “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” Galatians 3:26-27 Should we baptize people into Christ and then ask them to wear another name? “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?” Romans 6:3
6
We Preach Christ “Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them.” Acts 8:5 Should we save men by preaching Christ to them, then ask them to wear another name besides Christ after they are saved? “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” 1 Corinthians 2:2
7
Christ is the Builder of the Church “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18 “Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain. Psalm 127:1
8
Christ is the Foundation of the Church “Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone,” Ephesians 2:19-20 “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:11
9
Christ’s Blood Purchased the Church “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.” Acts 20:28 “Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” 1 Peter 1:18-19
10
Christ Saves “For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.” Ephesians 5:23 Christ came for all – but only those who obey Him will see heavenly salvation! “And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him” Hebrews 5:9
11
The Church Practices Only Christ’s Doctrine “Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.” 2 John 9-11
12
What Would You Name This Church? “Greet one another with a holy kiss. The churches of Christ greet you.” Romans 16:16
13
Conclusion To get into the Lord’s church you must: Hear (Romans 10:17) Believe (Romans 10:10; Hebrews 11:6; John 3:16) Repent from sins (Luke 13:3) Confess Jesus (Matthew 10:32; Acts 8:37) Be Baptized into Christ (Acts 8:38; 2:38) Be Faithful until death (Revelation 2:10) It is essential that you become a member of the church that Jesus bought with His own blood?
