1. I like to look for rainbows whenever there is rain And ponder on the beauty of an earth made clean again. 2. I know when I am baptized my wrongs are washed away, And I can be forgiven and improve myself each day. Chorus I want my life to be as clean as earth right after rain. I want to be the best I can and live with God again. Words: Nita Dale Milner, b. 1952; adapted. © 1989 IRI Music: Nita Dale Milner, b. 1952. © 1989 IRI When I Am Baptized

Can you find the way from the Gate to Eternal Life? Attention Activity
7
Here’s the path we found. Attention Activity
8
Life can be like a maze sometimes. We can make many different decisions and follow many different paths, but only one path will lead us to eternal life with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. That path is the gospel of Jesus Christ. Attention Activity
9
If the path through the maze represents the gospel, what do you think the “Gate” represents? Attention Activity
10
Let’s read 2 Nephi 31:17. 17 Wherefore, do the things which I have told you I have seen that your Lord and your Redeemer should do; for, for this cause have they been shown unto me, that ye might know the gate by which ye should enter. For the gate by which ye should enter is repentance and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost. Attention Activity
11
Baptism into the church of Jesus Christ is the “gate” that starts us on the path to eternal life. Attention Activity
12
What do we receive after we are baptized that helps us make right choices and stay on the path to eternal life? Attention Activity
13
What do we receive after we are baptized that helps us make right choices and stay on the path to eternal life? Attention Activity The gift of the Holy Ghost

What do we do each week that helps us remember the important ordinances of baptism and confirmation? Attention Activity
15
What do we do each week that helps us remember the important ordinances of baptism and confirmation? Attention Activity Partake of the sacrament
16
After the Apostasy, the gospel of Jesus Christ was no longer on the earth. Attention Activity
17
The priesthood was not on the earth either, so no one could properly be baptized, be confirmed, or partake of the sacrament. Attention Activity
18
The gospel and the priesthood had to be restored in the latter days. Attention Activity
19
This is what our lesson is about today

“ “Lesson 12: Important Ordinances Are Restored,” Primary 5: Doctrine and Covenants: Church History, (1997),57 Lesson 12: Important Ordinances are Restored
21
When the priesthood was restored, men who held it were able to baptize, confirm, and bless and pass the sacrament..
22
This was the first time since the Apostasy that these ordinances had been done with the proper authority.
23
Jesus also taught the people about baptism. Those who want to be baptized must repent. He said they must be baptized to become members of His Church. They must love and obey Jesus. They must also be at least eight years old.
24
Jesus taught the right way to baptize. He said a priest in the Aaronic Priesthood or a man who has the Melchizedek Priesthood may baptize a person. The man takes the person into the water and says a special prayer.
25
The man who is baptizing puts the person down under the water. Then he brings the person out of the water.
26
When people are baptized, they promise to obey Jesus. They also promise to say and do good things.
27
Jesus told about blessing babies. Men who have the Melchizedek Priesthood can bless babies. The men hold the baby in their arms, and one man gives the baby a name and a blessing.
28
Jesus told about the sacrament. But if we do something bad, we should not take the sacrament But if we do something bad, we should not take the sacrament until we have repented. He said we should take the sacrament often.
29
He died for us on the cross. The bread helps us think of His body. We take the sacrament to remember Jesus.
30
The water helps us think of the blood of Jesus. We remember that he suffered and bled for us in the Garden of Gethsemane.
31
We make covenants when we take the sacrament. We promise that we will try to be like Jesus A covenant is a promise.
32
We also promise to obey His commandments. If we keep our covenants, we are promised that His Spirit will be with us.
33
On 6 April 1830, Joseph held a meeting to organize the Church.
34
Oliver Cowdery, Hyrum Smith, Samuel Smith, David Whitmer, and Peter Whitmer came to help him.
35
They had all been baptized. Other people also came to the meeting.
36
Joseph and Oliver put their hands on each man’s head to confirm him a member of the Church of Jesus Christ and give him the gift of the Holy Ghost.
37
After the meeting, many people were baptized, including Joseph Smith’s mother and father.
38
What a wonderful day! The Church of Jesus Christ was on the earth again.
39
After a few weeks, there were 27 members of the Church. They did not all live in the same town. Joseph Smith asked them to come to a conference, which is a special meeting for all the Saints.
40
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ are called Saints.
41
The Saints had the sacrament at the conference. The Holy Ghost blessed the Saints, and they were very happy. Some men were ordained to the priesthood.
42
Some people had already been baptized into other churches, and they wondered why it was necessary to be baptized again. Joseph inquired of the Lord and received the revelation recorded in Doctrine and Covenants 22. Doctrine and Covenants 22.
43
In this revelation the Lord explained that the people who had been baptized into other churches had not been baptized by someone with the proper priesthood authority, so they needed to be baptized again by someone who did have the authority.
44
Some other people who attended the conference were not members of the Church. They learned about the gospel and wanted to join the Church, so they were baptized.
45
After the conference, Joseph Smith went to another town. Some people there also wanted to be baptized. Joseph said they could be baptized in a nearby stream.
46
The people built a small dam in the stream to make the water deep enough to perform baptisms. In the night, some people destroyed the dam.
47
The dam was rebuilt, and Oliver Cowdery began to baptize people. A mob is a group of mean people. Soon a mob came. They said bad things and tried to hurt the Saints, but the Lord kept the people safe.
48
The mob continued trying to make trouble for the Church. They told lies about Joseph Smith and had him arrested.
49
At a trial, they found people to give false testimony against the Prophet. But many other people told the truth about Joseph, proving the words of the enemies to be false.
50
Joseph was released, but almost immediately he was arrested again by people from a nearby county. Another trial was held, and Joseph was again found innocent and was released. While he was imprisoned, people spit on him and would not give him food.
51
Meanwhile, the Saints in Colesville had been praying that Joseph would be safe and would be able to return and confirm them as members of the Church.
52
At the end of August, Joseph and Oliver Cowdery returned with some other men to Colesville.
53
On the way they came upon a large group of men working on the road.
54
Some of these men were enemies of the Prophet, but although they looked closely at the Prophet and his friends, the men did not recognize any of them and allowed them to pass by.
55
Because of this miracle, Joseph arrived safely in Colesville, and the members there were able to be confirmed and partake of the sacrament.
56
Earlier in August, Joseph had planned a small meeting to confirm his wife, Emma, and another woman.
57
When Joseph went to get wine for the sacrament, he was met by an angel.
58
The angel told him not to buy wine from his enemies (see D&C 27:3). D&C 27:3D&C 27:3
59
The angel also told him that it did not matter what was eaten or drunk in the sacrament as long as those who were partaking remembered Christ’s atonement (see D&C 27:2). D&C 27:2D&C 27:2

10 Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you? Enrichment Activity 1 T
101
Now Let’s Read Doctrine and Covenants 20:37 37 And again, by way of commandment to the church concerning the manner of baptism—All those who humble themselves before God, and desire to be baptized, and come forth with broken hearts and contrite spirits, and witness before the church that they have truly repented of all their sins, and are willing to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end, and truly manifest by their works that they have received of the Spirit of Christ unto the remission of their sins, shall be received by baptism into his church. 77 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen. What are some of the characteristics of a person who is ready to be baptized. Is humble Has a broken heart Has a contrite spirit Is willing to take upon himself or herself the name of Jesus Christ Is repentant Is determined to serve the Lord until the end Shows by works he or she is sincere Enrichment Activity 3 T
113
Let’s discuss these characteristics and how we can continue to develop them after we are baptized. I want to encourage you to read and think about Doctrine and Covenants 20:37 during the week to help you prepare to take the sacrament. Enrichment Activity 3 T

Where was Jesus Christ baptized? Where were you baptized? Enrichment Activity 4 T
115
People today are baptized in baptismal fonts filled with warm, clear water. Enrichment Activity 4 T
116
But people can be baptized anywhere there is enough water to completely immerse a person. Enrichment Activity 4 T
117
Today as well as in times past, people have been baptized in streams, lakes, oceans, water tanks, and swimming pools. Enrichment Activity 4 T
118
Joseph Smith was baptized in a river, and many other Presidents of the Church were baptized in streams, ponds, or canals. Enrichment Activity 4 T
119
Howard W. Hunter was baptized in a swimming pool. Enrichment Activity 4 T
120
Does it matter where a person is baptized? What is important about how a person is baptized? Enrichment Activity 4 T
121
It is important to be baptized by immersion by a person with the proper priesthood authority, regardless of where one is baptized. Enrichment Activity 4 T
122
Many people, who desire to be baptized face challenges. Sometimes people do not have the support of their families and friends. Enrichment Activity 5 T
123
In some countries where the Church is just starting to grow, it can be difficult to find a place to baptize people. Listen to the following story of one such case. Enrichment Activity 5 T
124
In the Republic of Kenya, Africa, Church members had to make many preparations to hold baptisms. They brought a water tank from a neighboring country. They spent five hours pumping water from a well and carrying it to the church building, which was four miles from the well. The level of the water in the tank was not high enough to completely immerse the person being baptized, so ten people stood inside the font to raise the level of the water. Enrichment Activity 5 T
125
Let’s see who can memorize the fourth article of faith. Enrichment Activity 6 4 We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. T
126
I want to express my feelings of gratitude for the ordinances of baptism, confirmation, and the sacrament and for the blessings you receive because of these ordinances. It is through these ordinances that we can follow that straight and narrow path that leads us back to our heavenly father. Testimony

While we were thus employed, praying and calling upon the Lord, a messenger from heaven descended in a cloud of light, and having laid his hands upon us, he ordained us, saying: JS—H 1:68–71
