“The Law” (part 4b) All verses are from the New King James Version unless noted. How God Remedied The Defects of the Law

Previously 1.No divisions of the law were understood by apostles 2.What the Law Could Not Do 3.Why the Law could not accomplish life and righteousness 4.A look at the allegory of Hagar and Sarah 5.How God Remedied The Defects of the Law a)The law of Moses was not a suitable rule of life for all mankind

Today How God Remedied The Defects of the Law: 1.The Law was not a suitable rule of life for all mankind 2.The Law could not exhibit the full scope of the malignity of sin 3.The Law could not impart life and righteousness All of the defects within the law are remedied through the Father sending His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh (Rom. 8:3) TODAY’S SUBJECT

COULD NOT EXHIBIT THE FULL MALIGNITY OF SIN SECTION 2 God’s Remedy For The Law “For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh” (Rom. 8:3)

The Law 1.Clarified what was sin (Rom. 7:7) 2.Showed the hatred of sin by God Destruction of a sinful world with a flood (2 Pet. 2:5; Gen. 6:5-7) Destruction of cities with fire and brimstone (2 Pet. 2:6; Gen. 13:13; 18:20, 21; 19:12, 13, 24, 25, 28) 3.Displayed a cost for sin (man sins…animals die)

The Crucifixion Shows the Full Demerit of Sin “Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand” (Is. 53:10)

WARNING! Caution against Dangerous Reasoning 1.“If a sinner is to perish eternally in hell for sin, should not the Christ to suffered eternally as well?” Fails to see who died on the cross Fails to see distinction of quality versus quantity $200,000.00 could purchase a house What about 200,000 rocks? 200,000 rocks would be the same quantity but insufficient quality to purchase a house $200.00 would be sufficient quality, but insufficient quantity to purchase a house

WHY DO THE GOSPEL WRITERS AFFIRM THAT JESUS DIED SO QUICKLY AFTER BEING SUSPENDED ON THE CROSS? “Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time” (Mk. 15:44) “But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs” (Jn. 19:33) Crucified @ 9:00 AM Died @ 3:00 PM Mark 15:25, 33, 34, 37

Why do the Gospel writers affirm that Christ died so quickly after being suspended on the cross? Because He completed the work of redemption (Jn. 19:30) There was nothing else that needed to be done To stay on the cross longer would have been superfluous He suffered the right amount to please what was determined by Jehovah Not based so much on the quantity of suffering as it was the quality of Who suffered and died! A sinner perishes in eternal hell because he has rejected the means for reconciliation, profaned the blood of Christ, and insulted the Spirit of grace!

In Redemption Objectionable A sinner suffering for sinners is not an adequate payment for the crime (principle in 1 Pet. 2:19, 20) The quality is insufficient and ineffective because all have sinned Unobjectionable A divine person, sinless, holy, harmless dying as an offering for sin (1 Pet. 2:21-24; Is. 53:4, 5, 10, 11) The quality is very effective (1 Pet. 1:18, 19)

WARNING! Caution against Dangerous Reasoning 2.“One drop of His blood is so powerful to cleanse the world of sin” This runs the other extreme and diminishes from the cost of sin! Why not only prick His finger? There was nothing superfluous in the suffering of Christ—He suffered the sufficient amount to please the Father and provide redemption for all mankind!

The Real Demerit of Sin The Son of God hanging on a cross as an “offering for sin,” shows: The Son of God hanging on a cross as an “offering for sin,” shows: – Sin is hostile to heaven – Sin is offensive to heaven – Sin is damning to man – Sin is very costly When I sin, I crucify afresh the Son of God (Heb. 6:6)!

The Real Demerit of Sin The Son of God hanging on a cross as an “offering for sin,” shows: The Son of God hanging on a cross as an “offering for sin,” shows: – Sin is hostile to heaven – Sin is offensive to heaven – Sin is damning to man – Sin is very costly “For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again” (2 Cor. 5:14, 15) “For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again” (2 Cor. 5:14, 15)

Galatians 3:13, 14 13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. 13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. “Redeemed,” -to buy up, hence to secure our release, to effect our deliverance Law of Moses had no provisions for absolute forgiveness Demanded absolute perfect obedience (Gal. 3:10) Reminder of sin (Heb. 10:3) Insufficient sacrifices (Heb. 10:4)

Galatians 3:13, 14) 13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. As long as the law remained in effect, so did the curse—Jesus redeemed us from the curse of the law and took away its power/authority over us so that we can receive “blessing” “Curse” (Deut. 21:22, 23) Was not literally cursed by the law as He was sinless, harmless, innocent, and fully approved by the Father (Jn. 8:28, 29; Heb. 7:26)

He appeared cursed Died as if he deserved it (Mk. 15:25-32) Yet, it was for our benefit (1 Pet. 1:18, 19)

The demerit of sin is clearly seen in the innocent, harmless and holy Son of God suffering as a curse to benefit man, but He: Was not guilty of sin Was not deserving of punishment Bore no consciousness of sin Had no remorse for sin Was not the object of divine displeasure Died to buy us back for His good pleasure

Will You Take Up The Redemption Found In Christ? Believe Him (Jn. 8:24) Repent of Sin (Acts 2:38) Confess Him (Mt. 10:32) Be immersed with Him into His death (Rom. 6:3, 4) Live faithful to Him until you die (Rev. 2:10)
