16 Final Review Meeting – Brussels, 22 April 2008 16 Final Comments… The area covered by VD-H is relatively new and, as such, researches around it is still quite heterogeneous After a relatively slow start, we managed to gather around VD-H a critical mass of researchers working on short reach optical network, transmission and components

17 Final Review Meeting – Brussels, 22 April 2008 17 …Final Comments During the period of this e-Photon/ONe+, Home and Short-Reach Network have gathered increased interest in all fields of communication technology Some operator research centers, such as FT, are envisioning “optical backbones” inside our apartments: – Plastic Optical Fibre to provide a point to point architecture suitable for already constructed houses where the installation of a new cable can be performed by the user itself – Silica Fibre infrastructure for new houses where the optical cables will be installed in ducts running in the walls at construction time.
