It is important for parents to know what to expect during pregnancy, birth and the adjustment period after birth.

Stages of Labor Stage 1 4 – 24 Hours Strong contractions: cause cervix to dilate (increase in width) Dilate from 2.5 cm to 10 cm Contractions last 30 – 90 seconds each Water Breaks – amniotic sac breaks – loose amniotic fluid – naturally or is broken by doctor

Stage 2 30 minutes to 2 hours Actual birth or delivery Contractions continue – pushes baby out – head first Baby out – umbilical cord is cut Mucus removed from nose and mouth Drops in eyes and Vitamin K injection – prevent excessive bleeding from umbilical cord Baby given Apgar Score – rated 0 – 2 in each category: Heart rate, breathing, muscle tone, response to stimulus & skin color

Stage 3 Delivery of placenta (afterbirth) 15 – 30 minutes

Ceserean Section (C-Section) Baby too big – Mother to small Breech birth /Transverse birth Exhaustion Fetal Distress Mother’s Dying – car accident, cancer, etc STD’s Multiple Births

Identical – one egg & one sperm Fraternal – 2 or more eggs & 2 or more sperm Twins – one in 70 births More twins because of fertility drugs Triplets – 1 in 7,000 births Quadruplets – 1 in 750,000 births Anything above 4 – because of fertility drugs/invitro fertilization
