1 Expectations for Health Class  No eating or drinking.  No cell phones. If I see it, I take it.  Participate in all activities.  Be organized. Keep all papers for the end of year test. (open notes)  Quizzes/tests to be determined on classroom behavior and participation.

2 Bellringer  Write down 5 (or more) stressors in your life.  Discuss

3 Positive Stress Management Strategies

4 Today, students will:  Recognize own physical, psychological and emotional responses to stress  Distinguish between stressors that are within one’s control and those that are not  Practice positive coping mechanisms in dealing with stress and avoid those behaviors, which will adversely affect physical and emotional health.

5 Stress  The body and mind’s response to everyday demands or threats  Can be positive or negative, real or imagined  The body goes through a patterned response, General Adaption Syndrome (“fight or flight response

6 General Adaptation Syndrome (“fight or flight” response) Stage 1 – Alarm Stage – The hormone adrenaline is released – Physiological responses Increased heart rate, sweating, muscle tension and dilated pupils Stage 2 – Resistance Stage – The body is trying to recover from the stressor, return to normal Stage 3 – Exhaustion stage – The body’s defenses become worn down. Physical and/or emotional diseases can develop – Stress-related diseases Cardiovascular disease, cancer, skin disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, depression, and anxiety

7 Your reaction  On your bellringer sheet, write down how your body and/or mind reacts to your 5 stressors  Discuss

8 Coping with Stress  Must be able to distinguish which stressors you can control and those you cannot  Cancelled pool party due to lightning  Death of a grandparent  Failing a math test  Being late to school  Write down 5 more stressful situations and then switch with a partner to identify if it is within a person’s control or not

9 Positively Coping with Stress  Take control and direct your energy towards things you can change  Better time management, relaxation techniques, daily physical activity and better preparation for the challenges

10 Not Recognizing the Importance of Positive Coping Strategies  May turn to negative behaviors to escape their stress  Alcohol and drug abuse, overeating, oversleeping, or acts of violence  Going back to your bellringer, for each stressor, write down a positive coping strategy to deal with each stressor

11 Article  Read silently or in a small group of 2 or 3 the article  When finished reading, write down the Six Tips for Taking Charge and write down personal examples for each using people/experiences from your own life  Turn in and get final worksheet

12 kidshealth.org Articles  Summarize the main ideas of 3 “Stressful Situations” articles  Directions: Go to kidshealth.org/teens  Click on Mind, then Stress and Coping Center, then Stressful Situations  Choose 3 articles to read  Write down the main points for each of the articles that you read
