Phonic Screening Check Week of June 15 th 2015

What is the phonics screening check? It is a quick and easy check of your child’s phonics knowledge. Your child will sit with their teacher and be asked to read 40 words aloud. Some words will be new and some words your child will recognise. They will be a mix of real words and non-words. It will take a few minutes but there is no time limit. The test is designed not to be stressful for your child. Your child’s results will be written within the end of year report. Children who are not successful will be retested at the end of Year Two.

What are we looking for from your child? The children need to sound out the word in front of them and blend it to form a fluent word. Some words will be non-words - your child is familiar with these types of words. The idea is that children cannot read the non-words by using memory and therefore have to use their decoding skills. park jound

Is your child reading a word in the correct way? Video clip. http://education.gov.uk/schools/teachingandlearning/assessme nt/keystage1/a00200415/phonics http://education.gov.uk/schools/teachingandlearning/assessme nt/keystage1/a00200415/phonics Highlights fluency. Last word they say is the answer we have to take. Must use the correct pronunciation of a sound for words. e.g. blow, vead Accents/ specific pronunciation difficulties are taken into account Please practise using the phonics books you have at home.

The children are familiar with playing games from the following website which allows them to practise blending real and non- words. http://www.letters-and-sounds.com/ When we listen to children read we encourage them to recognise the sounds that they have learnt and to apply them e.g. such, light. We use the e-books from Oxford Owl as an opportunity to apply their decoding skills. Books can be selected at an appropriate level for each individual. http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/
