Criteria for inclusion in MICS3 Relevant MDG indicators Relevant for MTSP priority areas Continuity with WSC indicators Interagency agreement on indicators Previously tested indicators Do not compromise data quality of other indicators MICS is a practical tool for collecting information on indicators Possible to collect through household surveys

Questionnaires Household questionnaire Questionnaire for individual women Questionnaire for children under 5 –Measurement of height and weight of children under 5 –Testing of salt used in household for iodine content –Collection of geographic information

Household: A person, or a group of persons living and eating together Survey Unit: Household Separate interviews of all women age 15-49 in the household, and of mothers/primary caretakers of all children under age 5 However, not all modules are asked about and to the same person/unit Units, Targets, Respondents

Household questionnaire Identify respondent: knowledgeable adult or mother/primary caretaker of children in household to begin with Multiple possible respondents –Ask respondent about household –Ask respondent about household members –Ask HH members about themselves –Ask mothers/primary caretakers about children

Womens questionnaire Core + Additional + Optional Respondent: Woman age 15-49 Modules: –For all women –Ask 15-24 women only (sexual behavior) –Ask if had live birth during last 2 years (tetanus toxoid & maternal and newborn health)

Under-5s questionnaire Core + Additional + Optional Respondent: Mother or primary caretaker of under-5s living in the household Modules –For all mothers/primary caretakers

Dos and Donts Administer household questionnaire to ALL households in the sample –NOT only households with women and/or under-5 children Administer womens questionnaire to ALL women age 15-49 living in sampled households –NOT only one woman per household Administer under-5s questionnaire to mothers/primary caretakers of ALL under-5s living in household –NOT for only one under-5 per household –NOT for only under-5s whose mothers are in the household
