How can we find equal parts of a whole? Discussion: One Piece is Missing A fourth grader was making Fraction Cards for 3/4 and 5/6, and said that she noticed something about both of them. She said that they both have one piece missing, so they must be the same size. Do you agree? Disagree? How would you make an argument for whether you agree of disagree? Students work with a partner to come up with an argument for whether 3/4 and 5/6 are the same size. Encourage students to use drawings and further examples of fractions that have one piece missing (7/8, 2/3) in their arguments. Give students about 10 minutes, and then bring them back together to share their thinking. 3434 5656

How can we find equal parts of a whole? Discussion: Which is Larger? Over the next couple of days, we will be using the Fractions Cards you made to play a new game called Capture Fractions. In this game, you will compare two fractions and decide which one is a larger portion of the whole (or more than one whole). The player who has the larger fraction will take both cards. Which fraction is larger, 1/4 or 3/5? You can use the pictures on the card to help you, but also think about what else you know about the fractions to help you decide. 1414 3535
