Immunization MICS3Data Analysis and Report Writing Workshop
2
International Goals & Targets MDG 4: Reduce Child Mortality by two thirds among children under five Indicator 15 - Proportion of 1 year old children immunized against measles
3
International Goals & Targets By 2005, Reduction in infant and under-five mortality rate by at least 1/3, in pursuit of the goal of reducing it by 2/3 by 2015 Ensure full immunization of children under one year of age at 90% nationally, with at least 80% coverage in every district or equivalent administrative unit Extend the benefits of new and improved vaccines and other preventive health interventions to children in all countries (Hepatitis B, Hib, Yellow Fever, etc)
4
Background It is recommended that all children receive the following immunizations: At birthBCG (tuberculosis) and Polio 0 At 6 weeksPolio 1 and DPT 1 (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus) At 10 weeksPolio 2 and DPT 2 At 14 weeksPolio 3 and DPT 3 At 9 monthsMeasles HepB and HiB have same schedules as Polio and DPT
5
Indicators In MICS3, immunization indicators are calculated as -the percentage of children aged 12-23 months who received each specific vaccine by the age of 12 months and -the percentage of children aged 12-23 months who received BCG, DPT 1-3, Polio 1-3 and measles by the age of 12 months
6
Methodological issues The model schedule is adapted in some way by most countries so that it more closely meets their needs.
7
Methodological issues Routine Reporting depends on accurate, timely and comprehensive reporting from the local level to the national level can provide continuous data on trends Surveys depends on mothers having vaccination cards in the household or accurately recalling childrens vaccinations are done periodically, providing limited information on trends
8
Methodological issues Coverage rates based only on data from vaccination cards can be biased because children with cards are probably more likely to be vaccinated than children without cards. So, for children without cards, mothers are asked to report whether or not their children have received specific vaccinations.
9
Methodological issues Indicators are calculated for children aged 12-23 months: –All children at this age should have completed all vaccinations –Their experience is the most recent experience which is not truncated.
12
Calculation Children vaccinated according to card data + + Children vaccinated according to mothers = Total number of children vaccinated For children without cards (or have cards with missing or incomplete dates) assume the proportion vaccinated by 12 months of age is same as for children who have cards.
13
Example: BCG Percentage vaccinated according to card85.2 Percentage vaccinated according to mothers report+3.7 Total percentage ever vaccinated88.9 Percentage vaccinated by 12 months according to card98.0 Apply percentage88.9 x.98 Percentage vaccinated by 12 months87.1
