2 Main issue Unmet need for family planning, although not a MDG indicator yet, has been identified as an indicator for Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women Defined using a set of questions eliciting current preferences and behaviours (women at risk of pregnancy, their fertility preferences and current contraceptive status) Unmet need is defined as the proportion of all married/union women who are fecund, sexually active, wish to avoid another birth or space at least two years and are not using a method of contraception

4 Proportion of demand satisfied For monitoring purposes it is proposed that the following indicator be constructed from the response set: Proportion of Demand Satisfied by Modern Contraception = Modern Method users/ (Modern method users + Traditional method users + Unmet need) or Proportion of Demand Satisfied by Any Method of Contraception = (Modern Method users + Traditional method users) / (Modern method users + Traditional method users + Unmet need)

5 Methodological issues Data can be obtained for all women or for women currently married/union The proportion of satisfied demand for contraception can be reported by modern methods or by all methods It requires adaptation of the questionnaire and technical assistance for its implementation Follow up on the inclusion of this indicator in the analysis and reporting stages
