Vegetable oils as fuels C1b 5.5 How can we use vegetable oils as a fuel? Cummins Racing
2
Oil has had its chips! A new process uses old cooking oil or even oil from plants like oilseed rape to make fuel for cars. These new fuels are called biofuels and might be just what we need to make our cars more environmentally-friendly.

Greenergy More mean than green With 270 horse power, this car can do 0 – 60 mph in 5 seconds! That’s serious acceleration! But what is interesting about this vehicle at the Green Races Championship in Utah is that all of the fuel is renewable, made from maize fermented to alcohol.

Biodiesel usage in US passes important milestone Forget its more exciting uses: biodiesel has some very practical benefits – used by large lorries like this. Greenergy

White van goes green Even domestic vehicles - the kind of thing you might see on the road every day - are now using biodiesel. Who knows? This van may be taking chip shop oil to the refinery to be made into diesel!

Biodiesel is CO 2 neutral because………. the amount of CO 2 given off when used as a fuel equals the amount absorbed while growing.

Biodiesel: any fuel made from vegetable oil Vehicles with diesel engines will run on most vegetable oils Challenges * should start and stop on normal diesel * 5% mix causes no problems * old oil needs filtering * vegetable oil is more viscous (thicker) [so add some white spirit !) ] * less tax for the Government * over use of land by growing just one crop Advantages * cleaner burn in engines ( less soot) * less sulphur dioxide (….acid rain) * if spilled, breaks down 5X quicker so is less harmful. * useful by-products: animal feed & and glycerine for soap manufacturing C1b 5.5 Vegetable oils as fuels
