3 Verses 1-41: The demigods and Lord Brahmä journey to Mount Kailäsa in an attempt to satisfy Lord Çiva Knowing beforehand of the impending disaster, Lord Brahmä and Viñëu had not gone to the sacrifice. Now hearing from the demigods what transpired, Lord Brahmä advised them to go without mental reservations and surrender unto Lord Çiva’s lotus feet and beg his pardon. Thus they all went along with Brahmä to Çiva’s abode, Kailäsa. (Contd)

The demigods and Lord Brahmä journey to Mount Kailäsa… (Contd) The residents of Kailäsa include demigods endowed with all mystic powers, Kinnaras, Gandharvas, and Apsaräs. Kailäsa is surrounded by herbs, flowering plants and all varieties of valuable trees, and full of mountains filled with all kinds of valuable jewels and minerals. There are many waterfalls and caves. On Kailäsa Hill there are many varieties of singing birds and other kinds of animals also, like musk deer, elephants, monkeys, boars, lions, forest cows, tigers, buffalo etc. (Contd) The residents of Kailäsa include demigods endowed with all mystic powers, Kinnaras, Gandharvas, and Apsaräs. The demigods also saw the two rivers named Nandä and Alakanandä (Ganges), which are sanctified by the dust of the lotus feet of Govinda. The demigods and Lord Brahmä journey to Mount Kailäsa… (Contd) The demigods saw Lord Çiva sitting under that tree practicing austerity, his body smeared with ashes. On his hair was the sign of a half-moon. Lord Çiva was dressed in saffron, absorbed in trance, and speaking to the saintly persons surrounding him, including Närada. The demigods, headed by Indra, offered their respectful obeisances unto Lord Çiva with folded hands. As soon as he saw Lord Brahmä, Lord Çiva, along with all the sages, immediately stood up and offered him respect by bowing down and touching his lotus feet.(Contd) The demigods saw Lord Çiva sitting under that tree practicing austerity, his body smeared with ashes. 7 Verses 42-53: Brahma glorifies and then requests Lord Çiva Lord Brahmä first glorified Lord Çiva then explained that persons who are mean to others are as good as dead anyway, and do not need to be killed. He explained that materialists sometimes commit offenses, but saintly persons do not take this seriously, knowing that such materialists are overpowered by the illusory energy. He requested Çiva to take his rightful share of the sacrifice, and to let the sacrifice be properly completed. Brahmä requests Çiva that by his mercy King Dakña may get back his life, Bhaga may get back his eyes, Bhågu his mustache, and Püñä his teeth, and that the demigods and the priests recover from their injuries. Lord Brahmä first glorified Lord Çiva then explained that persons who are mean to others are as good as dead anyway, and do not need to be killed. He explained that materialists sometimes commit offenses, but saintly persons do not take this seriously, knowing that such materialists are overpowered by the illusory energy. (Contd) Brahmäji’s arguments in his prayers why Çiva should tolerate/forgive the offenses & spare the life of Dakña You create, maintain, & annihilate this cosmic manifestation—they are your children and shouldn’t be taken too seriously (43) You introduced the system of varnäsrma dharma thru Dakña but if he is killed, who would run it? (Contd) You’re the Supersoul & the incarnation of the time factor, and thus shouldn’t be angry (46) Those with the separatist mind do not need to be killed as they’re already self-killed, or ätma-hä because they are envious, materialistic and give distress to others. “Thus there is no need for them to be killed again by an exalted personality like you.” Rather, make them Krsna conscious (47). They’re bewildered by mäyä and thus commit offenses. Besides it is the will of the Supreme Lord. But you’re a sädhu with full of compassion for everyone (48). You’re an advanced devotee, while Dakña is a neophyte bewildered by mäyä. Thus be compassionate & merciful (49) 10
