Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________

Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________ Kings and Royalty: o Highest position o Controlled large amounts of land o Provided fiefs (land) to nobles in exchange for loyalty and service o Ruled by Divine Right (claimed that God gave them their power, not the people) Do what you’re told!

Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________ Lords and Vassals: o Controlled land granted by the King o Paid taxes and supplied soldiers to the King

Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________ Knights: o Received land from the Lord in exchange for fighting o Lived by a code of honor called Chivalry So, let’s go and kill some stuff, eh?

Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________ Peasants and Serfs: o Lords allowed them to live on their land in exchange for food and services. o Gave most of their crops to the Lord o Could not leave the land without permission The word “serf” comes from the Latin word “servus” - meaning “slave”

Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________ Peasants and Serfs: The word “serf” comes from the Latin word “servus” - meaning “slave” CAN YOU SEE WHY?

KING LORDS/ VASSALS PEASANTS/ SERFS LORDS PAY TAXES TO THE KING LORDS GIVE MILITARY SUPPORT TO THE KING LORD LETS SERFS WORK ON HIS LAND SERFS PAY TAXES TO LORD (no rights) SERFS PAY TAXES TO LORD (no rights) The whole system of feudalism is basically a trade-off of land for taxes, loyalty, and protection. KING GIVES LORDS LAND

Now, if you’ve played Assassin’s Creed 2, you’ve heard of Monteriggioni… But it’s actually a real town in central Italy! Sì, quella è la mia casa. (Yup, that’s my crib.) Sì, quella è la mia casa. (Yup, that’s my crib.)

But if there IS an attack, all of those peasants rush inside the city walls for protection. The Lord lives in the huge house inside the walls. And that’s how feudalism works! The peasants live outside of the city walls… And Knights guard the city walls in case of an attack.

Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________ Feudal Contract: Feudal Contract Lord Atton & Lord Leo “Oh ye thee alas yore ‘ere ever nor ‘oft unto doth sire prithee n’er forsooth in whence thou thus…” Let’s take a look at an ACTUAL feudal contract! Read the contract and answer the questions that follow…

Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________ Diary entry/cartoon creation: Choose one of the two projects listed on your sheet and follow the directions listed there! NI! NI! NI! USE YOUR TIME WISELY!

We’re done! ________________________________________________________ Thank you for all your hard work today! Make sure to put your notebooks in the crate and your folders in folders, please!
