Outline o A little chess history o Play

Chess – India o Most likely dates to India around 600 AD o possibly a lost earlier ancestor of both Chinese and Indian versions o Chaturanga o The pieces are organized like the Indian army of the time o king, minister, elephant, horse, chariot, footsoldier o there was a 4-player version o Distinguishing characteristics o pieces of differing power o capture by replacement o weakness / centrality of the king o a game of nobility o some association with military strategy

Chess – East Asia o Distinct versions of Chess appears around 800 AD o xiang-qi o Played on the points of the board o Includes a special "castle" in which the king must stay o Other asian variants developed along these lines o Shogi o Changgi o All of these available in the Game Lab

Chess – Middle East o Emerges in Persia o Chatrang o And then in the Islamic world o by 640 o Shatranj o some of the modern names appear o shah = king o shah kmat = "the king is dead" o instead of general, vizier o the sultan's adviser o rukh = chariot o Is well known in Baghdad by the time of the Crusades o scholars are writing books containing chess problems

Chess – Europe o First appears in Europe around 900 AD o Quickly becomes popular o popular enough the Church has to declare it sinful o later relents o Italy and Spain were the most important centers of chess scholarship o Italy closest to the Muslim world o jumping off point for the Crusades o Spain o part of the Islamic world up to 1492

Chess – Rules o King: same as modern chess o Fers: (modern queen) 1 square diagonally o Alfil: (modern bishop) 2 squares diagonally leaping intervening pieces like the Knight. o Knight: same as modern chess o Rook: same as modern chess o Pawn: one square forward only; capturing diagonally forward o Pawns promote to Fers on the back rank. o No castling. o Checkmate, stalemate or "bared king" are all wins. o Dice o 6 = King o 5 = Fers o 4 = Alfil o 3 = Knight o 2 = Rook o 1 = Pawn. o Check o must escape o Keep rolling until you have a legal move
