36 36 Intelligent Browser Referencing When a user requests a page, the browser checks each object to see if it appears in cache. If it does, the browser makes a request of the server to check whether the content is still valid. This reduces the amount of data transferred, however, each object still requires a connection to validate it, and therefore you pay the latency penalty for each freshness check. F5 allows the web accelerator to control the browser cache using etags and eliminates the freshness check altogether. When you eliminate the freshness check with F5’s Web Accelerator, you don’t pay the latency penalty, and your application performs better.
