Lab Safety

Number One Rule Act like scientists. Absolutely no horsing around. You will be removed from class and receive a zero for that lab assignment. This is non-negotiable for everyone’s safety!

Lab Safety Science is hands-on. Labs are a big part of this class. We will be using things like: Glassware Chemicals Knives/Razors Hammers and Picks We will be going outside at times. What potential hazards can you see in each of these? What safety precautions MUST be observed?

Lab Safety Hazards Broken glassware Precautions Never pick up broken glass with your hands! Let people know there is broken glass so they can avoid it. Clean it up with a broom and dustpan.

Lab Safety Hazard Chemical spills on table Chemical spills on your clothes Chemical spills on your skin Precaution Do not touch it! Notify your teacher Remove the article of clothing if you can do so without spreading the chemical Immediately rinse with running water until told to stop.

Lab Safety Hazard Cuts from sharp objects Drop heavy object on foot Precaution Exercise extreme caution when working with sharp tools If cut, immediately apply pressure and notify teacher Wear closed toed shoes

Lab Safety Hazard Slipping on muddy ground (or wet lab floor) Insect bites and stings Precaution Wear closed toed shoes on lab days appropriate for going outside. Sneakers are ok but wear old ones – they might get muddy If lab floor is ever wet (with anything but chemicals), immediately dry it up with paper towels. Let me know on Day 1 if you are allergic to anything! Always carry your epipen!
