8 A Framework for Learning Knowledge Acquisition The transfer of knowledge that is needed to perform a new skill or activity Practice The opportunity to practice those new activities in an environment where learners cannot do harm to themselves or anyone else Mastery Achieved by practicing those new skills with the support of someone who is already an expert 2 Competency-based Learning:

9 Hopkins Changed Medical Education! Sir William Osler Physician in Chief, Johns Hopkins Hospital (1889-1905) He who studies medicine without books sails an uncharted sea, but he who studies medicine without patients does not go to sea at all. 3

10 What People Say – the Problem! There is a lot of information out there, but it is impossible to find. I dont have time to go to training. I just need to get what I need to know without leaving my desk. My sense was that training was something that was being done to me – I did not feel involved in the process. The training I received taught me some terms, but I still dont know how to do my job! I was sent e-mails saying I had to be in two classes at the same time! The training that went out was badly written and full of grammatical and spelling errors. I passed all the tests, but it didnt mean a thing. I still dont know how to use the system. The instructor told me how to fill in some fields, but I didnt know why or what it was all about. 4

11 What People Say – the Problem! The training told me how to work fill out forms, but I didnt get any information about policies and procedures. I received training from someone who did not seem to have a clue what our business is. I was looking for practical experience – all I got was a bunch of PowerPoint slides. The training and the application did not match! I work at the hospital, and the training I got was university-oriented. I work at the university, and the training I got was hospital-oriented. The training was too generic – it did not apply to my department. The training was boring! 5
