Slide 7 Johns Hopkins Medicine Policy on Interaction with Industry
8
Slide 8 Agenda Background: Why the policy was adopted Who the policy covers What is covered Focus of todays FastFacts session: Gifts and food
9
Slide 9 Why adopt a policy on interaction with industry? Goal of pharmaceutical, medical device, and healthcare product industries: principally to develop and sell new products. Goals of JHM healthcare providers: deliver excellent patient care practice evidence-based medicine make independent decisions Concern that industry marketing to JHM providers skews clinical decision-making and medical education Policy: limit influence of industry marketing patient care decisions
10
Slide 10 Who does the policy cover? All faculty and staff, including physicians, nurses, administrators, etc. All students and trainees Full-time and part-time Volunteers All JHM organizations: School of Medicine Johns Hopkins Hospital Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center JHCP JHHC JHHCG JHM International Howard County General Hospital Suburban Hospital
11
Slide 11 What is covered? Gifts from industry Food supplied by industry Educational support from industry Speaking for industry Continuing medical education Access by industry representatives to JHM facilities Free pharmaceutical samples Scholarships and travel Ghost-writing and ghost-authoring
12
Slide 12 Definition of Industry Industry - biomedical, pharmaceutical and medical device companies and companies that make other products used in the treatment of patients or the provision of medical care Separate Johns Hopkins policies cover relationships with other industries
13
Slide 13 Session focus: Gifts and food Gifts create an expectation of reciprocity – conscious or subconscious Create personal relationships with industry representatives Reciprocity expected in the form of business, access, special treatment Much Obliged
14
Slide 14 Policy JHM personnel may not accept gifts or food from industry. Examples: Pens, coffee mugs, entertainment, travel Meals on site, meals off-site Even small gifts can influence our decisions Research in behavioral economics and neuroscience Free food and meals from industry are gifts
15
Slide 15 Limited Exceptions: Gifts Gifts Certain educational material, if given via JHM Some patient education material if: a physician determines it is accurate and useful for patients, the majority of the content is patient information, similar material cannot readily be obtained from a non- industry source, and the corporate logo or name and product information do not dominate the material.
16
Slide 16 Limited exceptions: Food Food/meals Part of formal, reported consulting for industry At CME events (per ACCME guidelines) Meetings with sponsors regarding ongoing research projects Large networking events at professional society meetings
17
Slide 17 Examples (1) When a vendor rep comes to repair or install equipment, can he bring breakfast for the staff? No. The food is a gift designed to develop goodwill toward the company so JHM will continue to do business with the company Can I attend an information session about a companys new equipment at a local restaurant? No. The meal is a gift intended to create a sense of reciprocity so attendees will be inclined to order the new equipment. The company can send emails or printed material describing their new equipment.
18
Slide 18 Examples (2) One of our pharmaceutical vendors leaves patient brochures at the clinic; the brochures discuss treatment options for a particular condition and have the companys logo on the back. Can we accept these? Yes – if an attending physician reviews the material and determines (a) the content is accurate and useful for patients, and (b) the brochures are more informational than promotional Can a vendor sponsor continuing education for nurses? Yes – if the program fully compliant with the appropriate accreditors standards A medical supply company sends a fruit basket for the clinic staff at the holidays. Can we accept the gift? No – you should express gratitude, but explain that JHM policy does not allow you to accept gifts from industry
19
Slide 19 Conclusion The goal of the new policy is to shift our relationships with industry by limiting the influence of marketing activity. Culture change is difficult, but this is the right thing to do. Many other academic health centers have adopted similar policies. With less industry influence, JHM providers will be able to make more independent decisions, hopefully leading to higher quality care and lower cost for patients. At a minimum, the perception of influence will be attenuated.
20
Slide 20 Future FastFacts Sessions on the Industry Interaction Policy Speaking for Industry Industry Representatives and Access to JHM Facilities Industry Support for Education
