Statistics Division Beijing, China 25 October, 2007 EC-FAO Food Security Information for Action Programme Side Event Food Security Statistics and Information for Targeting Poor and Hungry Populations at Sub-national Levels FOOD CONSUMPTION Dietary energy consumption of 2090 kilo calories per person per day Daily expenditure per person of about 2960 Kip 45 percent of the monetary value of food consumed came from own production.

Statistics Division Beijing, China 25 October, 2007 EC-FAO Food Security Information for Action Programme Side Event Food Security Statistics and Information for Targeting Poor and Hungry Populations at Sub-national Levels FOOD CONSUMPTION

Statistics Division Beijing, China 25 October, 2007 EC-FAO Food Security Information for Action Programme Side Event Food Security Statistics and Information for Targeting Poor and Hungry Populations at Sub-national Levels DIET COMPOSITION

Statistics Division Beijing, China 25 October, 2007 EC-FAO Food Security Information for Action Programme Side Event Food Security Statistics and Information for Targeting Poor and Hungry Populations at Sub-national Levels DIET COMPOSITION (Cont’d)

Statistics Division Beijing, China 25 October, 2007 EC-FAO Food Security Information for Action Programme Side Event Food Security Statistics and Information for Targeting Poor and Hungry Populations at Sub-national Levels INEQUALITY IN INCOME AND FOOD CONSUMPTION

Statistics Division Beijing, China 25 October, 2007 EC-FAO Food Security Information for Action Programme Side Event Food Security Statistics and Information for Targeting Poor and Hungry Populations at Sub-national Levels Nationwide one out of four persons was suffering from hunger (food deprivation),  hunger being more dramatic in the Northern and Central regions where one out of three was suffering from hunger. Nationwide one out of three persons was critically food poor; almost 2 out of five were in this condition in households of young heads and large size households. The food consumption pattern was unbalanced; poor in fat and close to the upper acceptable limit in carbohydrates, mainly from rice. Households with low income were most vulnerable with high reliance on own food production (82%) and spending more than two third of their total consumption to buy food. CONCLUSIONS

Statistics Division Beijing, China 25 October, 2007 EC-FAO Food Security Information for Action Programme Side Event Food Security Statistics and Information for Targeting Poor and Hungry Populations at Sub-national Levels The LECS-III can be improved for the purpose of estimating food security statistics and indicators : Reduction and standardization of number of units for food quantity measurement (kilogram, gram and liter). Additional work in collaboration with public-health nutrition experts is needed to revise the food composition table for the LECS for future use; experts in economics for the use and interpretation of data from the productive sector. Improvement in the description of LECS food items is needed for better specified food consumption used such as beef, hunted or trapped animals, fish cultivated, other meat, etc. to better estimating nutrients values. RECOMMENDATIONS

Statistics Division Beijing, China 25 October, 2007 EC-FAO Food Security Information for Action Programme Side Event Food Security Statistics and Information for Targeting Poor and Hungry Populations at Sub-national Levels Capability of future LECS in addressing policy-decision makers need for information on food security statistics and indicators Complement the current food security information system with food security statistics derived from the LECS for the purpose of policy analysis, design and monitoring. Need for strengthening the current platform on food security “National Nutrition Committe” and the FIVIMS initiative in using food security information derived from the LECS. POLICY IMPLICATIONS AND FINDINGS
