3 Pratt & Adamski Concepts of Database Management Client/Server Systems Alternative Technology – client/server A networked system in which a special site on the network, called the server, provides services to the other sites, called the clients. Clients send requests for specific services they need. Software, often including a DBMS, running on the server. The server then processes the request and sends only the appropriate data and other results back to the client. Example: Send me the orders of all my customers in Ohio

4 Pratt & Adamski Concepts of Database Management Figure 9.7 Client/Server Systems Client/Server has the DBMS run on the file server, but the user sends requests for specific data, not files. front-end processing Back-end processing

5 Pratt & Adamski Concepts of Database Management Advantages of Client/Server Systems Resource Sharing More efficient than file server systems.Only the necessary data, rather than the entire file is transmitted across the network Provides for the possibility of distributing work among several processors. Workstations need not be as powerful or expensive as in a file server environment. The user doesn’t need to learn any special commands or techniques.

6 Pratt & Adamski Concepts of Database Management Advantages of Client/Server Systems Easier for users to access data from a variety of sources. Provides greater level of security than file server systems. Powerful enough to replace expensive mainframe applications.
