Process Concept An operating system executes a variety of programs: –Batch system – jobs –Time-shared systems – user programs or tasks

Process – a program in execution; process execution must progress in sequential fashion A process includes: program counter stack data section

Process State As a process executes, it changes state – new : The process is being created – running : Instructions are being executed – waiting : The process is waiting for some event to occur – ready : The process is waiting to be assigned to a process – terminated : The process has finished execution

Objective of multiprogramming – some process running at all times Maximize the CPU utilization Objective of Time sharing – to switch the CPU among processes so frequently that users can interact with each program while its running Uniprocessor System – only one running process

Scheduling Queues Job queue – set of all processes in the system Ready queue – set of all processes residing in main memory, ready and waiting to execute Device queues – set of processes waiting for an I/O device Process migration between the various queues

Initially all the processes put into the ready queue Once the process is assigned to the CPU and is executing, one of the several events could occur – The process could issue an I/O request, and then be placed in an I/O queue – The process could create a new sub-process and wait for its termination – The process could be removed forcibly from the CPU, as a result of an interrupt, and be put back in the ready queue

Schedulers Long-term scheduler (or job scheduler) – selects processes which processes should be brought into the ready queue Selects the processes from the pool and loads them into memory for execution Short-term scheduler (or CPU scheduler) – selects from among the processes that are ready to execute, and allocates the CPU to one of them.

Primary distinction – frequency of their execution Short term scheduler must select a new process for the CPU frequently Process may execute for only a few milliseconds before waiting for an I/O request Short term scheduler must be fast Short term scheduler executes at least once every 100 millisecond

Schedulers (Cont.) Processes can be described as either: – I/O- bound process – spends more time doing I/O than computations, many short CPU bursts – CPU - bound process – spends more time doing computations; few very long CPU bursts System will have the best performance – have a combination of CPU – bound and I/O bound processes

Context Switch When CPU switches to another process, the system must – save the state of the old process and – load the saved state for the new process Context-switch time is overhead; the system does no useful work while switching Time dependent on hardware support

Process Creation Parent process create child processes, which, in turn create other processes, forming a tree of processes Resource sharing –Parent and children share all resources –Children share subset of parent’s resources –Parent and child share no resources Execution –Parent and children execute concurrently –Parent waits until children terminate

Fork() When a process forks, it creates a copy of itself a fork in a multithreading environment means that a thread of execution is duplicated, creating a child thread from the parent thread. Under Unix and Unix-like operating systems, - the return value of fork() is 0, whereas the return value in the parent process is the PID of the newly created child process.

The fork operation creates a separate address space for the child. The child process has an exact copy of all the memory segments of the parent process though if copy-on-write semantics are implemented actual physical memory may not be assigned (i.e., both processes may share the same physical memory segments for a while).

Both the parent and child processes possess the same code segments, but execute independently of each other When a process creates a new process, two possibilities exist in terms of execution – The parent continues to execute concurrently with its children – The parent waits until some or all of its children have terminated

execlp() system call is used after the fork One of the two processes to replace the process memory space with a new program execlp system call loads a binary file into memory

Process Termination Process executes last statement and asks the operating system to decide it ( exit ) –Output data from child to parent (via wait ) –Process’ resources are deallocated by operating system Parent may terminate execution of children processes ( abort ) –Child has exceeded allocated resources –Task assigned to child is no longer required –If parent is exiting Some operating system do not allow child to continue if its parent terminates –All children terminated - cascading termination

Cooperating Processes Independent process cannot affect or be affected by the execution of another process Cooperating process can affect or be affected by the execution of another process Advantages of process cooperation –Information sharing –Computation speed-up –Modularity –Convenience

Producer-Consumer Problem Paradigm for cooperating processes, producer process produces information that is consumed by a consumer process – unbounded-buffer places no practical limit on the size of the buffer – bounded-buffer assumes that there is a fixed buffer size

Interprocess Communication (IPC) Mechanism for processes to communicate and to synchronize their actions Message system – processes communicate with each other without resorting to shared variables IPC facility provides two operations: – send ( message ) – message size fixed or variable – receive ( message )

Implementation Questions How are links established? Can a link be associated with more than two processes? How many links can there be between every pair of communicating processes? Direct Communication Processes must name each other explicitly: – send ( P, message ) – send a message to process P – receive( Q, message ) – receive a message from process Q Properties of communication link – Links are established automatically – A link is associated with exactly one pair of communicating processes – Between each pair there exists exactly one link – The link may be unidirectional, but is usually bi- directional

Indirect Communication Messages are directed and received from mailboxes or Ports –Each mailbox has a unique id –Processes can communicate only if they share a mailbox Properties of communication link – Link established only if processes share a common mailbox – A link may be associated with many processes – Each pair of processes may share several communication links – Link may be unidirectional or bi-directional

Sender is notified who the receiver was.

Synchronization Message passing may be either blocking or non- blocking (Synchronization or Asynchronization) Blocking is considered as synchronous – Blocking send - T he sending process is blocked until the message is received – Blocking receive - T he receiver blocks until a message is available

Non-blocking is considered as asynchronous – Non-blocking send - The sending process sends the message and resumes the operation – Non-blocking receive - T he receiver retrieves a valid message or null

Buffering Messages exchanged by communicating processes reside in a temporary queue. Queue of messages attached to the link; implemented in one of three ways 1. Zero capacity – 0 messages Sender must wait for receiver (rendezvous) 2. Bounded capacity – finite length of n messages Sender must wait if link full 3. Unbounded capacity – infinite length Sender never waits

Remote Procedure Calls Remote procedure call (RPC) abstracts procedure calls between processes on networked systems. Stubs – client-side proxy for the actual procedure on the server. The client-side stub locates the server and marshalls the parameters. The server-side stub receives this message, unpacks the marshalled parameters, and performs the procedure on the server.

Remote Method Invocation Remote Method Invocation (RMI) is a Java mechanism similar to RPCs. RMI allows a Java program on one machine to invoke a method on a remote object.
