2 Enterprise Customers’ Data Protection Goals
Performance and scalability Meet backup and restore windows Handle rapidly growing amounts of data Lower CAPEX costs – doing more with less Improved OPEX – automated management and reporting Support for Symantec NetBackup OpenStorage (OST) Better disaster recovery capabilities

3 NetBackup and Protection Platform Together
4/22/2017 What happens when the most powerful backup application teams up with the fastest and most scalable backup appliance? Industry-leading performance Predictable and reliable backup performance Fast restores with no rehydration penalty Unmatched scalability Pay-as-you-grow scalability up to 4PB Maximum efficiency and cost savings Lowers capex costs by maximizing storage utilization Reduces required energy, cooling, and floor space costs Market-leading OST integration Highest level of OST integration in the industry Mission-critical application protection High-speed multi-stream database backup with deduplication The world’s best business value for business recovery

4 HPP Scalability and Performance in Action
Scalable performance Backup up to 10TB per hour per node (system scales from 1 to 8 nodes and up to 80TB per hour throughput) “Before Protection Platform, we fought to meet our backup windows. With HPP, performance has been amazing. We meet our windows and everything is clean” Scalable capacity Usable capacity (before dedupe) scales from 48TB to 4PB per system “We are storing far more data in less physical space than we did with our previous deduplication system”

5 Bigger and Faster Backups at Lower Cost
Consistent and predictable backup performance Industry leading backup & recovery performance Concurrent deduplication accelerates time to completion Fastest time to safety Even faster restores Forward referencing eliminates “rehydration” when restoring Restore up to twice as fast as inline technologies Lowest costs* Reduce capex up to 26% and opex up to 32% Up to 29% lower total cost of ownership * Based on 5-year TCO model against EMC Data Domain and IBM ProtecTIER

6 HPP Differentiators in NBU Environments
Cut backup and restore times with multiple concurrent backup and restore jobs Massive parallelism backs up and restores data faster Faster wholesale recovery without reconfiguring − identical read and write profile Ideal platform for phased transition to OST Supports both VTL and OST simultaneously Leverage existing Fibre Channel infrastructure or 10GbE or both Multitenant OST storage servers support test and production as well as charge-back modeling Transparent data-at-rest encryption for OST Supports all Hitachi Data Systems arrays and all disk types Saves customer fees for Symantec-managed encryption Automation, automation … and more automation Automated storage reclamation and catalog updates Will explain OST in subsequent slides

7 Industry Leading NetBackup OST Support
NetBackup OpenStorage (OST) supported features Auto Image Replication (AIR) Opt Dupe Optimized Synthetics Granular Recovery Technology Accelerator Seamless migration via HPP Storage Pools

8 Symantec NetBackup OST Integration
Support of NetBackup OST (advanced features) Auto Image Replication (replication of backup sets between multiple domains and/or multiple sites in separate NBU catalogs) Optimized Duplication (single domain, multiple sites, multiple copies of backup sets in one or more NBU catalogs) Optimized Synthetic Backups, NBU Accelerator and Granular Recovery Multiple retention periods through NetBackup storage lifecycle policies Ultimate flexibility when it comes to leveraging customer SAN and LAN environments – protect the customer investment OST ingest over Ethernet OST ingest over Fibre Channel SAN

9 Symantec OST Auto Image Replication Support
Symantec OST Auto Image Replication (AIR) is used to replicate backup images between multiple NetBackup domains or NetBackup masters, often across various geographical sites, to improve disaster recovery  Replication is controlled by NetBackup but executed by HPP Leverages HPP built-in replication capabilities including one-to-one and many-to-one replication Automatic catalog management at primary and remote sites Leverages deduplication to replicate only unique data between Protection Platform systems, reducing impact on the network Protection Platform has chosen to support OST A.I.R. to support mutli- domain Netbackup environments, typical in Enterprise environments. Opt_Dup, is for single domain environments and will be supported at a later date.

10 Certified for AIR Over Fibre Channel or IP
SLP Lowers Bandwidth Requirements up to 97% NBU Master Server A NBU Master Server B Data Center 1 – NBU Domain A Data Center 2 – NBU Domain B Catalog the Images Copy to Tape

11 Symantec OST Optimized Duplication Support
Symantec OST Optimized Duplication (Opt Dup) is used to duplicate backup images within a single NetBackup domain from 1 OST device (such as Protection Platform PBBA) to another NetBackup manages the process, which is executed by Protection Platform NetBackup receives the file metadata so it can update the catalogs Leverages deduplication to replicate only unique data between the HPP devices to reduce the impact on the network between the sites Protection Platform has chosen to support OST A.I.R. to support mutli- domain Netbackup environments, typical in Enterprise environments. Opt_Dup, is for single domain environments and will be supported at a later date.

12 Symantec OST Optimized Duplication
Media Server Local Device Remote Device Catalog Start Opt Dupe 1 2 Data Transfer Copy 1 Update Catalog 4 Copy 1 Copy 2 Copy 2 3 Done Or Could Be Continuous Data Transfer Features Media server initiates duplication and Protection Platform performs the data transfer Uses Storage Lifecycle Policies or NBU Vault Benefits Utilizes Protection Platform replication technology to transfer data Only replicates unique data to lower impact on network Reduces workload on the media server Faster and more efficient duplication Need to have backups of catalog

13 Support for Optimized Synthetic Backups
Symantec Optimized Synthetic Backup is used to “synthesize” a full backup from a combination of previous full and incremental backups Eliminates the need to perform full backups on client systems Client CPU and memory resources are used minimally Reduces network bandwidth and storage requirements Full data sets are not moved over network Leverages Protection Platform deduplication to minimizes storage used Lowers risk and improves business RPO More frequent backups means less potential for data loss Shorter backups allow multiple backups per day (approaching CDP)

14 Why Use Optimized Synthetic Backups?
Creates a restore-ready full backup No “FULL+INC+INC+INC” path to recovery Faster recovery time improves RTO Backups are smaller and take less time Improves time to safety (local copy) Backups can be performed more often More restore points improves RPO Eliminates operator errors Always restores from latest backup Less Risk Simpler administration Less Time Less data to move More Agile More restore points

15 Symantec Optimized Synthetic Backups
Client Incremental Backup Full Backup Optimized Synthetic Incremental Backups Lightning-Fast Backups! Load Balanced Media Servers Todays traditional synthetic full is created by pulling data through the media server then writing the new full image back to the device. Optimized Synthetic Optimized synthetics are created immediately by the backup appliance. NetBackup instructs which parts of previous backups to use. Backup appliance creates a pointer map – no data movement required

16 Symantec Appliance Integration via OST
Protection Platform OST plugin for Symantec NetBackup appliances Allows a Symantec NetBackup 5200 or appliance to be configured as media server with Protection Platform as backend storage Enables fast, repeatable deployments of media servers with NetBackup OST Officially certified by Symantec Backup Clients Symantec Appliance

17 Industry-Leading Symantec Integration

18 Protection Platform & Symantec versus the Competition

19 Where HPP and NBU Provide Superior Value
Organizations with large amounts of data Scalable performance that can backup tens (or hundreds) of terabytes per day Large database environments High speed multiplexed database backups with dedupe and rapid restores Organizations experiencing rapid and/or significant data growth Scalable capacity to grow as their data volumes increase over time Transitioning from traditional Symantec NetBackup to OST Simultaneous support for both NetBackup OST and traditional NetBackup with VTL Ability to offsite critical data to DR data center via OST AIR or Opt Dup Organizations supporting or transitioning between multiple backup applications Simultaneous support for more than 1 backup application Adjust storage allocation non-disruptively, on an as-needed basis

20 Advantages Over Data Domain
Scalability advantages Data Domain fixed and limited capabilities leads to appliance sprawl, rip-and-replace upgrades and unpredictable costs Protection Platform allows pay-as-you-grow scalability of both performance and capacity in a single system Performance advantages Inline deduplication is a bottleneck that slows backup speeds and impacts the ability to reliably meet backup windows and restore SLAs HPP provides predictable high-speed backup and restore performance, and forward referencing means no rehydration performance penalty impacting restores from the last backup

21 More Advantages Over Data Domain
Protection Platform’s intelligent content aware deduplication technology understands different data types Turns off deduplication for compressed, encrypted, multiplexed, multi-streamed, structured, or specific clients that would not benefit from deduplication Data Domain’s unintelligent hashing algorithm treats all data the same Performing deduplication on unsuitable data causes low and unpredictable performance Leads to system sprawl, increased management complexity, and greater cost

22 Still More Advantages Over Data Domain
Data Domain lacks detailed reporting impacting the administrator and management’s ability to be able to produce Detailed reports by capacity, client, policy, day, occupancy Detailed reports for replication Protection Platform intuitive GUI and superior reporting capabilities increases management efficiency

23 Advantages Over IBM® Tivoli Storage Manager
TSM backup servers are monolithic: No secondary media servers are supported, which limits both scalability and the ability to balance workloads TSM cannot extend its resources into additional sites. With NetBackup, media servers can be put in multiple sites and manage optimized movement of backup images between them. Recovery is direct from any media server TSM lacks any intra domain automation. Symantec OST AIR provides the ability to directly move data efficiently between domains TSM requires ongoing reclamation and collocation. NetBackup full, incremental, differential, and synthetic backup capabilities ensure that backup data is regularly stored in a full recovery representation for rapid restoration

24 More Advantages Over TSM
Architecture − NetBackup delivers data protection at many sites, all under the control of a single master server leveraging remote media servers. This approach enables scale, load balancing and flexibility: backup everywhere and restore anywhere Flexible deduplication options – NetBackup provides client, media server, and target deduplication for the data center, remote office and virtual environments OST − OpenStorage allows NetBackup to manage backup copies independently and leverage advanced features of storage subsystems (like Protection Platform) Superior protection for VMware and Hyper-V environments − provides policy-based automation for the protection of virtual machines leveraging the latest advanced API features from VMware and Microsoft.

25 Positioning HPP and NBU Appliances
NetBackup appliances are integrated backup devices (combined backup server, software and storage) Protection Platform is a target dedupe device attached to a backup server. Some NBU appliances can also use HPP as a target Protection Platform scales far beyond NBU appliances (up to 4PBs). Lots of consolidation opportunity Protection Platform supports multiple backup servers and applications simultaneously Many additional factors dictate the sale of Protection Platform appliances versus NBU appliances

26 Protection Platform vs. NetBackup Appliance
