3
Why Get Prepared? Why do people buy car/life/home insurance? Peace of mind Ensure your loved ones can go one You never know when an emergency will occur
4
Common Misconceptions It can never happen here No place is immune to natural disasters Blizzards, Floods and Tornadoes are all possible The government will take care of us Katrina showed the world that the US is not prepared for a major disaster. Imagine multi nation wide disasters The government like any large organization is slow to move and may not arrive in time
5
Common Misconceptions (cont.) It will only be a few days Are you sure? What if it is longer? Recent ice storms in the East Coast left people without power for 14 days Katrina left people without power for 1.5 months (45 days) in some areas You are just paranoid! Perhaps but what can it hurt to be ready
6
Type of Emergencies - Natural
7
Type of Emergencies – Natural (cont.) Blizzards Can cause prolong power outages No heat for the house #1 concern Can leave you stranded inside your house Water & Food may become an concern Pipes can freeze & thus limit your water supply Even if you could reach the store no guarantee that delivery trucks reached the store
8
Type of Emergencies – Natural (cont.) Flooding Do you have the equipment to stop it Battery Sump Pumps, Sand Bags, Heavy Duty Pump What will you lose in your house Photo albums, collections, etc. Can displace you from your home Where are you going to live
9
Type of Emergencies – Natural (cont.) Tornadoes Do you have an emergency shelter Basement, Crawl Space, Safety Box What will you lose in your house Photo albums, collections, etc. Can displace you from your home Where are you going to live
10
Supplies For How Long? US Government advises a minimum of 3 days worth of supplies. Recent events have shown this estimate is too low. Experience from recent natural emergencies have shown 14 days is BARE minimum. 30 day goal is better target number
11
Supplies For How Long? (cont.) Should I store more than 30 days? You can but then you move into long term storage plans and survival storage which are beyond the scope of this presentation Won ’ t my stuff go bad? Yes and No Rotation is key for these type of storage solutions
12
Emergency Items – Priority List 1) Water is the HIGHEST priority item 2) Protection 3) Food 4) Shelter 5) Tools 6) Medical 7) Specialty Items
13
Emergency Items - Water Water is the HIGHEST priority item At 120° F a human can survive 2 days without water; most humans will die after 3 to 4 days without water! How much do you need per day? 1 gallon of “drinking” water per person 2 gallons of water per person for other activities –Washing/Cooking/Cleaning
14
Emergency Items – Water (cont.) Water can be stored in water bottles to water barrels to anything that will hold it.
15
Emergency Items – Water (cont.) Water has NO EXPIRATION date so it will never spoil. Water can become contaminated making it undrinkable Keeping water out of the light (sunlight or artificial) is the best way to ensure nothing grows in it. Adding chlorine or other water treatment chemicals can keep water safe for storage.
16
Emergency Items – Water (cont.) Water bottles are great way to store drinkable water for short periods of time. Plastic bottles leach chemicals into the water in long term storage Plastic bottles can easily allow bacteria to grow when in light for long periods of time
17
Emergency Items – Water (cont.) Water barrels are the prefer method to store water Food grade plastic designs for long term water storage Barrels can hold more water in less space than the water bottles Remember you are storing water to DRINK and USE. Barrels come in 5, 6, 15, 30 and 55 gal sizes
18
Emergency Items – Protection Emergencies can bring the best & worse of mankind NO ONE IS IMMUNIE TO THIS People will band together to help each other or become brutal and barbaric animals that turn on each other If you are hungry, tired, and have nothing to lose you will beg, steal and even kill in order to survive; That is human nature
