2. Why are Escape Plans Important?
In the event of a fire, time is critical, and every second counts.
A small flame can become a large, dangerous fire in thirty seconds.
Having an escape plan will help you to evacuate quickly and safely.
Remember:
Plan and practice your plan
If your home catches on fire: STAY LOW, GET OUT, and STAY OUT!
If your clothes catch fire: STOP, DROP, and ROLL until the flames are out.

Show two ways out of every room, remembering windows. To escape from upper-story windows, buy an Underwriter’s Laboratory-approved collapsible ladder.

Make sure windows and screens can be easily opened.
Teach children not to hide from firefighters.

Remember to GET OUT FIRST, and then call for help.

If you hear the fire alarm, leave immediately.
Use the stairs – NEVER use elevators during a fire.

Make sure everyone understands and practices how to open locked or barred doors and windows.
Never open doors that are hot to the touch.
Feel with the back of your hand; if the door is hot, use another escape route. Always open doors carefully; if heat and smoke come in, close it and use an alternate escape route.

Heaving working smoke alarms on every level of your home dramatically increases your chances of survival.
