The wildfire quickly grows into a massive conflagration threatening lives and structures. Within minutes it has cut the island in half between West 9 th & 10 th Streets. With strong winds blowing from the east, emergency responders now face the potential of a large loss of life due to the lack of an escape route from the west end of St George Island.
