1 Title 1 Reading 4 th Quarter Newsletter Kindergarten News Mrs. Linden Grades K-2 klinden@bcsoh.org (330) 273-0487 Your child has a subscription to an online reading program called Lexia. I have attached the flyer so that this can be used over the summer. Their username and password is also attached. Follow the directions on the flyer so that you can download it to your computer or iPad. This is a great program for them to use over the summer to maintain their reading skills. This applies to students in grades K-3. Thank you for all of your help with returning the Title 1 folders. The students did a nice job returning homework on time. First Grade News The first grade students have been so busy this nine weeks. Throughout the nine weeks, we have continued working through our Orton-Gillingham scope and sequence. Our main focus have been on initial consonant blends. We also focused a lot on improving our reading fluency with repeated readings and fluency circles. I am so proud of how well the students have mastered their sight words. Every student has mastered either 99 or 100 sight words, which is all of the first grade words! The Kindergarten students finished learning all of the letters this quarter. They have worked so hard this year identifying letters and learning the sound that each letter makes. Make sure you check their folders for their phonemic awareness books. Each week they had a different phonemic awareness phrase to illustrate that was based on our weekly sound. We also finished learning all of the Kindergarten sight words this quarter. Each week they add two new sight words to their red word books. We write these words on bumpy boards so that we can feel the words. These students need to continue reading over the summer so that they can practice blending sounds together to read words. 2 nd Grade News The second graders spent a lot of time learning syllabication this quarter. This is a great strategy for them to use when reading independently to decode unknown words. We learned three of the different syllable types and distinguished the difference between open and closed syllables. This is really tricky for most students, but they quickly grasped this method. We also worked on long vowels this quarter. Our focus was reading words that contain the silent e and words with long e.

2 Title 1 Reading 4 th Quarter Newsletter 4 th Grade News Mrs. Linden Grades 3-4 klinden@bcsoh.org (330) 273-0487 Students are selected for Title 1 Reading on a yearly basis. Just because they qualify for the program this year does not mean that they will qualify next year. We use many different components to determine eligibility. Parents will be notified in the fall for eligibility for the 2015-2016 school year. Thank you for completing the Parent surveys. The Information is very helpful for the future of the program. Thank you for all of your help with returning the Title 1 folders. The students did a nice job returning homework on time. 3 rd Grade News The third grade students spent most of the quarter finishing up our unit on long vowels. We even worked on r-controlled vowels. We started using word ladders to help us improve our phonemic awareness. Most of our time was spent on preparing for the OAA that the students took in April. We focused on many different comprehension skills to prepare them for this assessment. The biggest skill that we worked on was locating evidence in the text to support our answers. The 4 th grade students finished up their last Greek and Latin Root unit this quarter. They have really impressed me with how well they can use these roots to determine word meaning. This skill also helps them chunk word parts together, which helps them decode new words. We also worked with figurative language this nine weeks. We examined popular song lyrics, commercials, and television shows to prove that similes and metaphors are all around us in our daily lives. We read Owl Moon so that we could practice locating similes and metaphors in text. The students spent some time working in cooperative learning groups. While working in these groups, each student had a specific job that needed to be done daily. Ask your student what their job entailed. We used these groups to read Tattercoat, the English version of Cinderella, so that we could compare it to the American version. 4 th Grade Author Study The students have been working on a year long author study of Judy Blume. Since we meet during lunch, I read aloud a Judy Blume book to them while they are eating. We read three books by Judy Blume. We also conducted a mini research project on Judy Blume.
