Think about someone or something interesting Remember to set the mood. Make the reader feel the thing you are talking about. Use a lot of adjectives and adverbs p.473-477
8
Strong sensory details (sight, touch, taste, hearing, feelings, thoughts) Sight: Her face looked worn and tired Touch: Her hair was smooth Taste: The pie was tart and sweet Hearing: His voice always sounds rough Feelings: I felt warm around my mother Thoughts: I thought he looked busy
9
Supporting Evidence p.57 what is good supporting evidence? Vague Support = Not enough information Specific Support = better evidence to support the topic sentence or thesis Example 1: what disturbances? Every age group? Everyone? Example 2: what do you mean messy? Please explain Example 3: moving around? What are they doing? What kind of disturbance? Please explain

Metaphors and Similes Make comparisons of two dissimilar things. Similes use the word as/like Metaphors do not Ex: Simile – Bill was like an annoying bird chirping in my ear Ex: Metaphor – Bill was an annoying bird chirping in my ear
16
Metaphors and Similes Ex: Simile – Bill ran as fast as a cheetah in the school marathon. Ex: Metaphor – Bill was a cheetah in the school marathon. Similes make the sentence meaning more clear and therefore are used for rare comparisons. Metaphors are more ambiguous and are more poetic.
17
Common Similes "as old as dirt" "slow as molasses" "white as a ghost". “run like the wind”
18
Common Metaphors Bill is a pig This room is an oven. = a hot room The crowd began to simmer down. = calm down You are a recipe for disaster = someone who's personality will always cause trouble (note: “recipe for disaster” is a set phrase you cannot change it) A wire is a highway for electrons (it is not actually a highway) Veins are highways for blood The lawyer grilled the witness = the witness felt so hot due to questioning by the lawyer

Tommy is as cute as a pig. Cindy is a mule when it comes to her studies, she won't even take a break to eat lunch until her homework is finished! Bill is as plain as a glass of water. 28
28 Paraphrase the question: circle key words 1. the government = national funds 2. space program = exploring the cosmos 3. should spend = should allocate 4. promoting = spreading 5. developing technology = improving society through technology
29
29 paraphrase When faced with the question of whether or not our government should allocate tax dollars toward space exploration, there are two opposing views. One holds that going to space will increase our technological capacity, while others believe it is a waste of money and it can be used in other ways. I agree that the government should spend time and resources on space exploration because it has numerous benefits.
