2. American Dream Anticipation Guide Please pick up a copy of the anticipation guide from the middle table and read the directions. As you read the statement on the worksheet, use a scale from 1-10 to the rate the extent to which these ideas are prevalent today. If the idea is presented in the statement is something you are exposed to on a regular basis, rate it a 10. If you do not see evidence of the statement at all, rate it a one. Remember, there are plenty of numbers in between. For the quick write at the bottom, choose two and rationalize your score. In other words, justify your position.

Learning Objectives Content Objective: Students will be able to distinguish among the four types of writing and compose paragraphs in each of the four types of writing on a topic of their choosing. Language Objective: Students will take Cornell Notes on the four types of writing. Language Objective: Students will choose a topic they can write a paragraph about using the four types of writing. (One paragraph for each type of writing)

4. Slide One Questions or Main IdeasNotes and Explanations Expository Writing Persuasive Writing Writing in which author’s purpose is to inform or explain the subject to the reader. Writing that states the opinion of the writer and attempts to influence the reader.

5. Slide Two Questions or Main IdeasNotes and Observations Narrative Writing Descriptive Writing Writing in which the author tells a story. The story could be fact or fiction. A type of expository writing that uses the five senses to paint a picture for the reader. This writing incorporates imagery and specific details.

6. Choosing a Topic You may pick any topic you wish to write about. It can be a person, an important social issue, current event, etc. For Example: Denver Broncos Expository: A paragraph on when and how the Denver Broncos franchise was created. Narrative: Telling a story from the perspective of a fan from the game. Persuasive: A persuasive paragraph about why the Broncos should lower ticket prices. Description: Describe what a fan would hear, taste, touch, feel, and see when watching a Broncos game at Mile High Stadium.

7. Expository The Denver Broncos are a National League Football team based in Denver, Colorado. The team was established in 1960. They have played in six Super Bowls and won two, in 1997 and 1998. The Broncos’ most famous player was the quarterback John Elway, who played for the team during both Super Bowl victories. Officially the team plays at Sports Authority Stadium, but most local fans still call it Mile High after the former stadium. The Denver Broncos have had varied success over the years, but their fans are enthusiastic and loyal.

8. Narrative I remember when the Broncos won the Super Bowl in 1998. I was a freshman in college at UNC in Greeley. A group of us spontaneously decided to drive down to Denver to celebrate. At first it was really fun, because even though the streets were packed with cars and we couldn’t really go anywhere, everyone was very excited and celebrating together. Unfortunately the good feeling did not last. When we got to the Sixteenth Street Mall people were smashing windows and looting stores. We decided to leave, but when we were trying to go back to our car we got caught in a group that was pepper sprayed by police. It was hard to stay excited about the Broncos’ Super Bowl victory after that.

9. Persuasive The Broncos need to lower ticket prices. Even the cheapest tickets, which means the worst seats, cost $60 minimum. That is a lot of money to pay for a game at which you will have to climb all the way to the top and still not be able to see the action. It seems like the team organizers don’t care that the fans have to pay unreasonable prices to park. Furthermore, people have to buy whatever food and drink they want inside the stadium, and those prices are very high as well. So even if you pay the lowest price for a bad seat, realistically you will still end up paying around $100 for one person. I know many Broncos fans who would love to attend games, but who cannot afford it. The team could get even more fans in attendance at games if they would make some seats more affordable.

10. Description When you go to a Broncos game you will be swimming in a sea of orange and blue. As you walk around trying to get to your seat, your nose will be overwhelmed with smells. The scent of jalapenos from nachos mixes with hotdogs and hamburgers being grilled, and at the end of the game you can smell warm beer from the trash cans and from spills on the concrete. Once you are in your seat, you will hear the fans around you yelling either to cheer on the team or to vent frustration at the referees. You will also hear music and announcers very loud through the speakers. The best thing about going to a game, though, is everything you see. All kinds of people walk around and show up on the big screen. Even though it is crowded, it is entertaining to see all the different kinds of people in one place.
