6 How to Act Like a Goethe Student The GICS Triadic Agreements are the official discipline policy of GICS. They are limits for safe, respectful and responsible behavior for the GICS community (students, parents, and staff). They also outline the consequences for student behavior that is outside of the school’s limits. The Triadic Agreements support the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB PYP) attitudes and the IB Learner Profile. Details can be found on GICS website.

7 Homework Every night: 20 minutes of reading Record on Homework log Homework (excluding reading) should not exceed 30 minutes a night Encourage neatness Help with spelling errors All work will be stored in red folder

11 German Language Arts Goals Intensify language skills on their different levels In reading Writing (spelling especially for the native speakers )Intensify language Working with a dictionary Different leveled material Vokabelhefte New folders will go home with the kids from time to time. Homework (please help your child and use the pronouncement function on Google Translate) Things which are not finished, have to be done at home Reading books

12 English Language Arts Goals Reading Children in second grade are becoming fluent readers in chapter books. They should be reading at a DRA 30 or Level R by the end of the year. They also should be able to: - Read and comprehend main ideas. - Retell what happened in a story including main ideas, details about characters, setting and events. - Self-select just-right reading materials. - Make connections to their own background knowledge. - Read silently. Writing A second grader should be able to: - Use capital letters correctly. - Use and understand contractions. - Write stories with a beginning, middle and end. - Be able to do basic research from a non-fiction book. - Write in complete sentences with appropriate punctuation. - Understand and use first-person and third-person point of view. - Edit his or her own writing for spelling and punctuation.

13 Mathematics Goals Math Math in second grade builds on the previous year’s lessons and increases in difficulty. Kids in second grade math will: - Learn about even and odd numbers. - Use tally marks to count by five. - Read and make graphs. - Write numbers in word form. - Add two and three digit numbers. - Subtract two and three digit numbers. - Know the order of addition and subtraction operations. - Know the addition and subtraction fact families. - Start learning multiplication and division fact families. - Recognize patterns. - Round whole numbers to the nearest 10. - Know place value to the thousands. - Understand money including coins & bills, counting, adding and subtracting money. - Be able to measure length, weight and passage of time. - Tell time to the nearest five minutes. - Recognize two-dimensional geometric figures. - Solve word problems.
