Plot Exposition Lays the groundwork for the plot and introduces essential background information. Rising Action Complication arise, conflicts are introduced, and suspense builds. Climax The turning point in the action, usually involving an important decision, event, or discovery that affects the final outcome. Falling Action Events that occur after the climax. Resolution/Denouement Conflicts are resolved and mysteries are solved.

Setting The time and place of a story.
Why does the setting in “Marigolds” play such an important role in the story? Could the story be set in a different time or place and still be effective?

Symbol A person, place, activity, or object that stands for something beyond itself. What do the marigolds symbolize to Miss Lottie? What do they symbolize to the grown-up Lizabeth?
