3. Bell ringer  Choose one the following journal prompts and respond in your notebook. Remember your bell ringers are to get you in the habit of writing, so WRITE! You should have at least 2 paragraphs. 1.If you could only take 3 people with you on a trip around the world, who would you take and why? 2.If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be, and why?

4. Editing  Complete the “words commonly confused” worksheet.

5. Brainstorm  Use what you know about structure, design, and content of newspapers and…  Generate a list of skills a staff will need.  Brainstorm different departments (sections) of our school paper.  Decide which skills will apply to which departments.

6. Interest and skills inventory  Please fill out the interest and skills inventory sheet.

7. Design 1. How do you know what is most important story on the front page? 2. What are the techniques the newspaper utilizes to draw your attention to the content? 3. Why do you think front-page stories often continue on another page? 4. What other features on the front page seek to draw the reader’s attention to significant stories? Now look at our front page… What is the first thing that grabs your attention and why?

8. Elements of a Front Page…  Examine the elements of the front page handout.

9. Our Front Page  With a partner complete handout 1-1.  Define the terms.  Use the terms to label the elements of the front page.  Respond to the questions provided.

10. Elements of design  We will look at a couple different front pages.  Pay close attention to text, visuals, and white space.  Which one do you want to read and why?  What do you think about the design of the paper.  Make notes of what you think are good design elements for a front page. 11. Re-examine  Now go back and re-examine our front page.  Make notes on what we do well and what we can improve as far as elements of design.  How would you redesign the front page?  Keep these notes, you will design a front page for your introduction to Indesign software.

12. Making the Interview Work  Review pages 100-113 as a class. Make notes on how to make the interview work.  Write 10 questions you would ask in an interview with:  Your principal  A new teacher  A new student  The star (of the week) for (any fall sport) player  Come up with 3 stories we might run in the first edition (remember this edition will come out in the first part of October).  For each of the 3 stories, decide on 3 people you might interview.  Come up with interview10 questions for each of the interviews for the 3 stories.  Some questions may overlap for different interviewees.

13. Exit Slip  Name 1 element of design for the front page.  Name 1 thing you want to change about our front page.  Name 1 tip for interviewing.
