Introduction Survey of Toronto –“Can we learn from each other by comparing services between IAAO members?” –Focus on basic operations of admission of students, relations with institutes and questions on other services like management information Results of survey are interesting –Answers give (some) insight in similarities and differences between IAAO members

Gloals of IAAO members…. PastPresentFuture Admission for students Providing a quality online application system Admission for international students Standardization Handling more programs: master, etc Reducing costsProvide one environment for students IT: more digital services DatawarehouseStandardization Expanding services more less

Goal survey Berlin Results of discussion in Toronto –Desire to continue with a next survey –Subject: the admission of international students –Effectuation by Studielink Netherlands with help from UA Finland and UCAS England

Design Focus on –Law and regulations in your country Definition, handling tuition fee –Processes for admission of international applicants / students Specific the role of the AO –Communication with international students What and whom –Satisfaction factor on the admission of international students Parts to be improved?

Planning, execution of survey Preparation paper in June –Exchanged with Helen Thorne and Joanna Kumpula –Additions from Studielink team and extra help from Elna Broesder (..) Holidays were delaying progress –Survey finished after consultation with Joanna –published in September!

Participation and results 12 IAAO members –9 completed the survey –(program is not very user friendly…) No statistical processing –Plain numbers and graphical representation Some questions were hard to answer –Costs of admission of international students Did we cover all the import issues at the admission of international students? –Discussion during the presentation

Definition of international student foreign nationality foreign preleminary education living outside your countryother Norway1000 South Australia0010 England1010 Croatia0100 Oman1000 Sweden0111 Ontario1010 Denmark0100 Victoria1000 Netherlands1000 Berlin1110 British Columbia0010 Sometimes nationality is not important: why? Europa: outside EEA? -> then visum needed in Europe NL: secondary education determins processflow

% international students Mostly average < 10% –large spread Bachelor versus master –PhD/Dr ? A lot is not known… –country versus county?

Tuition fee? International students do have to pay tuition fee –Government does not subsidise international students Europe: –EU students have the same regime as domestic students –Non EEA are not subsided by government Norway has no tuition fee

Costs to enroll a student Difficult to estimate costs –Why? Interpretation of the question is not clear –Costs are between € 5000 -> € 9000 –My intention was: how high are the administrative costs to enroll an international student! Conclusion in the Netherlands: –Domestic student: ~ € 50 –International student: ~ € 500 –So?

Website with information? (Almost) everyone has a website: –Wendy: specific portal? Owner of website differs –AO: UCAS and HEAC Sweden –Other owner: Norway Netherlands Germany ApplyBC Canada

More then one website? 80% have more then one website –What does this mean? Collaboration with others? –6 -> yes –2 -> no –2 -> poorly yes no poorly

Special website to enroll? No special treatment for most international students If website exist: –“make it more easier” –“different info and deadlines due to visa needs”

Supported languages English is favorite –Arabic: HEAC Oman –French: OUAC (Ontario)+Uni-assist –German: Netherlands –Spanish and Russian: Uni-assist

Verify identity Everyone is verified Sometimes AO is in charge –What is the process? –Relation with institute?

Charge a fee? Fee undergraduate applicant varies from –€ 50.000 (?): SATAC to –€ 25, € 30, € 90, € 110 Fee graduate applicant varies from –€ 80.000 (?): SATAC To –25, 30, 90, dependent from institute

Satified with the process? Yes –Upload documents and a public face to the student No –Not applicable –Lower the tuition fee to the state before 2011 –Process mostly by hand, wish to digitise and add workflow

Portal to follow process? Everyone has a portal and is mostly owned by the admission organisation Every portal shows status –No workflow involved I conclude

Communication with applicant AO are mostly not the first in charge of communication with the international student How does the international student comes to the AO?

Who communicates? International students can go to several organisations Any comments on the quality of communication with international students?

Way of communication Total of 7 responses –One AO provides nothing for applicants: Studielink Netherlands –One AO provides only email contact: NUCAS Norway Collaboration between organisations? –6 say no –1 says yes

Collaboration with other countries Do you have a collaboration with one or more organisations in other countries? –Yes: 1 (collaboration with agents), No 7! No AO exchanges data with other countries at this moment Is there a need for exchange of data? –Yes: 5, No 2 Is there a need for other forms of collaboration with other countries? –Yes: 3, No: 4 –Standards around transcripts, share experiences, admittance conditions, regulations,

Conclusions International students is a hot topic –Lot of extra work –Students pay a lot more –Several organisations have to do with international students –And? Did the survey meet your expectations? Follow up?
