Review What are the 3 Types of Maps 1. Topographic 2. General Purpose 3. Thematic

What Type of Map is This? Thematic

What Type of Map is This? Topographic

What Type of Map is This? General Purpose Map

Scales allow us to accurately represent really big areas in a small amount of space

Scale Scale shows the relationship between the distance on a map and the actual distance on the Earth’s surface – Direct Statement Scale uses words to describe what a distance on a map represents in the real world 1 cm = 10 kilometres – Linear Scale uses a special ruler on a map to show what a distance on a map represents in the real world 0 km400 km – Representative Fraction Scale is a ratio where one unit on a map represents a specific number of the same unit in the real world 1:50 000 (1 cm on the map represents 50 000 cm in the real world)

Scale AreaDetailExample Large Scale Maps SmallA lot (streets, schools, railways, …) Topographic maps, road maps, city bus maps Small Scale Maps LargeA little (borders, lakes, large rivers, …) Globes, world maps, atlases

Converting Scales Converting Scales is EASY! In geography and map scale we often deal with cm and km so we must memorize only one conversion factor. 1km= 100 000cm

Converting Scales

These conversions are useful when it comes to understanding the scale bar on a map. 1 : 100 000 What the RATIO scale above is telling us is that for every one centimeter you travel on the map, you have travelled one hundred thousand centimeters in the REAL WORLD So it can be read as 1cm = 100 000 cm Or using conversions 1cm = 1 km
