Road Travelled……. Nelson Mandela Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world What happened since? And what are we to do now? Prepared and presented by D Roos National Cleaning Conference 15 th April 2010
3
We “trained” staff and they received certificates What about SKILLS and OPERATIONAL NEEDS? Can they do the job? Are we developing without career planning and gainful employment?
4
Skills v Obstacles & Barriers Unskilled drivers will not be able to avoid the potholes (a lack of skills slows them down and work has to be redone) Even a skilled driver battles to avoid potholes (obstacles and barriers)
5
And………..

WHO IS TO TAKE OWNERSHIP? The Cleaning Industry employ a large component of the unskilled illiterate of South Africa Are we expecting the impossible from them? Without industry commitment and “buy in” to pro actively develop the relevant level of knowledge and skills it is not possible to deliver industry best practice standards Industry needs to invest as part of their commitment to development of their most important asset, employees/people! It is of no use to invest in state of the art equipment, environmentally friendly and green products but we omit to develop our staff to the highest level of competency in using these tools to deliver the best service Do we want to build our businesses on a foundation to weak to meet consistent changing industry needs and demands?
7
Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow Yesterday is history with valuable lessons learnt One such lesson is that not all cleaners need a full qualification Today we have ever increasing demands and expectations from clients We should not place unskilled cleaners to deliver this world class service We need to develop them, it is our responsibility Cleaners need to know how to do the job within their scope of deliverables as per industry best practice and client expectations Tomorrow's planning starts today and prepares for the next…….today We only have today!

Driving the Industry Yesterday’s training vehicle was driven on a road unknown and dark Small light in the tunnel was the “willingness and commitment” for some to take on this challenge They took it upon themselves to get in the driving seat take the steering wheel and drive the “needs” of the industry towards skills development and training This vehicle was driven on a road not yet travelled ( writing unit standards, design and develop learning material, learner guides, assessment tools and even became assessors ) They had a very good navigator (SSETA) who assisted with management and guidance to overcome barriers, potholes and challenges, mistakes were made, success tasted and eventually a foundation for the future was laid
9
Driving the industry continue.. Now Industry has to take control of this vehicle and move from the backseat to the drivers seat, taking the steering wheel and driving the vehicle on the newly designed road to staff development QCTO – OFO – Occupational directed awards & certificates – etc……. ×We cannot afford to drive on yesterdays roads and make the same mistakes. ×We cannot drive yesterdays with tomorrows vehicles today without a licensed competent, motivated driver that abides by the rules of the road With clients as our passengers Industry needs to take ownership of this vehicle as the map is drawn, the route is planned. Get behind the wheel, get on route with the navigator and together we will reach our destination Industry knows what they want and need Input is vital to meet the needs and requirements A vehicle is as good as its driver!
10
Yesterday -Today Lets tow in the past! Take the good and apply the experience, knowledge and skills gained, to shape the Cleaning Industry Replace the old model with the new (SDA amendment) Don’t blame the vehicle because its is no longer needed Use the same principles to “upgrade” Industry Occupational needs to be addressed with input from stakeholders Many “standards” no standard: to ensure fair and valid fit for purpose skills development and training Training to focus on specialists with generalist knowledge and expertise In the past the objective was to train as many people as possible to get a qualification and recognition as a professional
11
HOW? WE invite you 1.To Regional Board meetings 2.To be part of task teams 3.To be part of the development process
