Sue Johnson Okaloosa Walton College 2007 Goal-setting

2 Our values affect our attitudes and how we define success: “To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest citizens and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give of one’s self; to leave the world a bit better…this is to have succeeded.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

3 Goal-setting Our attitude is affected by our needs: Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: Self-Actualization – reach full potential Esteem Needs – to feel important Social Needs – interaction with other people Safety Needs - to be free from threats Physiological Needs - to sustain life

4 Goal-setting Our values system steers our goals – Personal values – Professional values – Educational values – What do you want?

5 Goal-setting Goals must be SMART – S pecific – M easurable – A ction-oriented – R ealistic – T imely

6 Goal-setting S – Specific – state exactly what you want to accomplish. The goals are not vague or confusing, but clear and concise! Not just: I need better equipment….but: I want to buy a used computer. Not just: I want a nice house….but: I want to own my own 3 bedroom, 2-bath home.

7 Goal-setting M – Measurable – state what you want and when you want it. This enables you to measure your progress at any point along the way. I will save $1000.00 to buy the computer before the start of the next semester. I will save $10,000 for the downpayment by the end of 2 years.

8 Goal-setting A – Action oriented – this indicates how the goal will be achieved. Specify what you need to do to reach your goals. I will set aside $25.00 each week for the computer. I will save $500.00 per month for 2 years toward the downpayment.

9 Goal-setting R – Realistic – Is this possible? Are the goals attainable, considering the resources and constraints relative to your situation? I can afford to save this money.

10 Goal-setting T – Timely – Allow reasonable time to achieve the goals but not so much time that you lose focus or motivation. Timely goals have a specific deadline. I will achieve my goal by the end of this semester I will have the downpayment saved by December,2009.

11 Goal-settingAssignment After completing the goals setting exercises, you will write a five- paragraph paper defining your goals. Your first paragraph is your introduction. It will briefly state your three long-term goals: Personal Goal—relates to your life outside of NWFSC (home, relationships, etc.) Academic Goal—relates to how you will become a successful student Career Goal—includes how college will help you get your dream job

12 Goal-setting Assignment Your next three paragraphs will talk about these goals. Use a separate paragraph for each goal. Discuss several mid-term and short-term goals that will help you reach each long-term goal.

13 Goal-setting Assignment Follow the SMART formula: goal planning should be specific, measurable, action oriented, reasonable, and timely. Goals should also be positive. Set your long-term goals for 5 years from now, your intermediate goals for 2-3 years from now, and your short-term goals for a year from now.

14 Goal-setting Assignment Your last paragraph is your conclusion: Summarize your goals State your intentions to attain them – how will you adapt your life?

15 Goal-setting Assignment Paper Guidelines: Your paper must be typed and double-spaced, using an easily readable 12 pt. font (Times Roman, Courier, etc.) Include a one-inch margin on all sides. Skip a line between paragraphs.
