If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll never get there….
GOAL SETTING: If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll never get there….
2
FIRST, Write a Goal That is Important to YOU:
The goal can be personal, social or career-related. In groups of 3, discuss your goals by answering these questions: -Why is your goal important to you? -How will you work toward the goal? -What if your goal is not achieved?
3
S.M.A.R.T. GOALS
4
S.M.A.R.T. Goals Encourage MOTIVATION
Specific Measurable Action-Oriented Realistic Time-Bound
5
When a Goal is SPECIFIC…
It answers these questions: What--EXACTLY--do you want to accomplish? And WHERE? What is the PURPOSE of the goal? WHO is involved? What materials, money, time etc. are required?
6
When a Goal is MEASURABLE…
You can PERCEIVE the end result with one or more of your senses. You can measure progress b/c you can SEE, HEAR, TASTE, SMELL, or TOUCH it. You can MONITOR a measurable goal to keep yourself on track.
7
When a Goal is ACTION-ORIENTED…
You have made a PLAN. You seek opportunities. You have listed ACTIONS to take. You are DOING those actions. You are AWARE OF and are USING your skills and your abilities.
8
When a Goal is REALISTIC…
You are willing/able to work on it. It is not set too high or too low. You BELIEVE you can achieve it. You have the required skills, time, information, materials, funding, etc. You have accounted for possible obstacles. You might have already achieved something similar.
9
When a Goal is TIME-BOUND…
You have set a reasonable TARGET DATE. ( NO TIME FRAME, NO URGENCY! )
10
Goals that need “SMARTening…”
Have a high- income career Keep my Bright Futures Get up to date in all my classes Go to med school
11
SO…if SMART goals are: Specific Measurable Action-Oriented Realistic
Time-Bound then…
12
What’s Wrong with This GOAL?
Lose weight by going to the spinning class MWF and eating only a fist-sized portion of meat at lunch and dinner. BETTER: (I weigh 143 lbs. on 8/15 ) Lose 10 pounds by 10/22 H.S. reunion by going to spinning class MWF and limiting meat and carbs to a fist-sized portion each at lunch and dinner. Start today.
13
What’s Wrong with this GOAL?
Make friends by meeting lots of people in lots of places on or near campus BETTER: Make a couple of friends by the end of the semester by joining a UCF club, playing intramural baseball, and introducing myself to everyone I can in those groups. Smiling. Asking questions about their interests.
14
What’s Wrong with This GOAL?
Communicate better with my parents BETTER: Communicate better with my parents by calling them twice a week and ing them every weekend during Fall Semester. Tell them about my daily activities and ask about theirs. LISTEN and ask questions.
15
What’s Wrong with This Goal?
Get RICH and FAMOUS Goal or idle daydream??!!
16

Group Activity: Write a SMART Goal
1. Mary has been dismissed from UCF. She plans to re-apply after the required year away. 2. Jared, young mid-level manager in a small family-owned business is given responsibility to plan a “25-years-in-business” celebration for the owners. 3. Chantel, a college junior, wants to get a Master’s Degree at another institution. 4. UCF freshman, Al, wants to backpack in France after graduation. Money is tight. He has not been to France before, doesn’t speak French. 5. Madison has changed her major twice, still feels it’s not right for her. She’ll be a junior in the fall. 6. You need a professional wardrobe to interview for a corporate position and for the corporate workplace. You have only jeans and t-shirts (and a slim budget).
18
Is Your Group Activity Goal a SMART Goal?
What makes it SPECIFIC? What makes it MEASURABLE? What makes it ACTION-ORIENTED? What makes it REALISTIC? What makes it TIME-BOUND?
