Library Media Services Summer PD 2012 Janet Lanham Writing SMART Goals with

ON TARGET Essential Question How can I write SMART goals that align to school and district priorities, help me focus on student achievement, and strengthen my role as a teacher librarian?

ON TARGET Session Objectives Become familiar with Beyond Proficiency @ your library® Become familiar with SMART goals. Write SMART Goals for your professional growth and library program that reflect the Beyond Proficiency framework.

ON TARGET W HAT ARE SMART GOALS?

ON TARGET Specific/Strategic Measurable Attainable Results-oriented Time bound

ON TARGET Specific and Strategic Specific: Your goal should have its expected outcome stated as simply, concisely and explicitly as possible. It should answer questions such as; why, which, for whom, for what? Strategic: It should be focused on aligning your library program vision and mission with district visions and goals. Think CSIP.

ON TARGET Measurable You must be able to quantify your objectives so that you can measure your performance against them. It is not enough to say: “I want to promote the KBA nominees next year.”

ON TARGET Measurable You need to define precisely what your target is before writing your goal. For example: I will provide weekly instruction and circulation and monthly school-wide promotion of 2013 KBA nominees… Then consider content assessment measures…

ON TARGET Attainable Goals should be achievable; they should stretch you enough that you feel challenged, but be defined well enough that you can achieve them given your current situation and resources. You must possess the appropriate knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to achieve the goal.

ON TARGET Results-oriented As JCPS librarians, everything we do in the library should be traceable to students’ desks. Our ultimate goal is always to positively impact student achievement.

ON TARGET From JCPS Vision 2015 3.1. Design aligned, data-driven, and sustainable planning processes to provide a coherent focus in order to achieve the vision of the Board of Education. Align the Comprehensive District Improvement Plan (CDIP)and Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) with the Strategic Plan and ensure deep implementation of these strategies so that they impact the work on each student’s desk.

ON TARGET Results-oriented Goals should measure outcomes, not activities. This helps maintain focus on the larger mission and keeps you reaching for the horizon.

ON TARGET Time bound Sometimes timeframes are imposed upon us. (i.e., last date to place orders, unit weeks on curriculum maps). When that’s not the case, you need to set timeframes and end- dates that are realistic but exert a practical sense of urgency.

ON TARGET How can you fit in with school goals? Sample School Focus: Increase the percent of students meeting expected growth by 10% across all subgroups on 2013 K-PREP (or EOC for HS) assessments in reading. Sample LMS SMART Goal: Through school-wide promotion, weekly circulation and instruction (or targeted ELA collaboration) featuring 2013 Kentucky Bluegrass Award nominees, increase the percent of students meeting expected growth by 10% across all subgroups on 2013 K-PREP (or EOC for HS) assessments in reading.

ON TARGET Through school-wide promotion, weekly circulation and library instruction (or targeted ELA collaboration) featuring 2013 Kentucky Bluegrass Award nominees, increase the percent of students meeting expected growth by 10% across all subgroups on 2013 K-PREP (or EOC for HS) assessments in reading. Is it specific and strategic? Clear and concise? What? Which? Where? questions answered? Focused on bigger picture? S

ON TARGET Through school-wide promotion, weekly circulation and library instruction (or targeted ELA collaboration) featuring 2013 Kentucky Bluegrass Award nominees, increase the 2012 percent of students meeting expected growth by 10% across all subgroups on 2013 K-PREP (or EOC for HS) assessments in reading. Is it measurable? Quantifiable status or change? M

Is it attainable? Realistic? Do you have the skills and resources? A

Is it results-oriented? Does it address the students? Does it focus on outcomes, not activities? R

Is it time bound? When? T

ON TARGET Is it achievable? What’s missing? In order to better support the new KCAS for math, I will weed the 510 section of my collection, and add new items to the same, to achieve an average copyright date of 2006. Is it specific and strategic? Is it measurable? Is it results-oriented? Is it time-bound? S M A R T

ON TARGET Give it your best shot A goal that is written fairly well is better than no goal at all. Formalized goals can be powerfully motivational and self-fulfilling.
