2 Who is Trevor Lockman?  FBLA Enthusiast!  Nebraska FBLA State Vice President  Elmwood-Murdock FBLA Vice President of Special Projects  Athlete!  Cross Country  Track and Field (well, just track!)  Other hobbies/interests  Fishing  Hunting  Puzzles/Other logic challenges!

3 First Impressions: They are important!  What did I do wrong in my introduction to [unfortunate audience member]?  Keys to making a great first impression  Don't look like you just got off the set of the Walking Dead!  Be confident, this is much more welcoming to others  Make a good, firm handshake  Look your counterpart in the eyes and smile!  Be you!

5 What does a vice president do?  Local Chapter Vice President  Each chapter is different  Preside over a meeting in the absence of the president  Many coordinate the chapter's program of work  Recruit  Be awesome  State Vice President  Perform duties of the president in the absence of the president  Oversee the Nebraska FBLA program of work  Coordinate the Nebraska FBLA social media  Serve as a state voting delegate at the National Leadership Conference  Take pictures of state officer activities (and create cool videos with those pics!)

6 Duties of other offices  We need to be just as knowledgeable for the other positions!  President  Presides at all meetings  Serve as the official representative of the officer team  Must motivate the rest of the team and the chapter  Recruit  Secretary  Keep accurate minutes of all meetings  Keep other officers aware of the minutes (the minutes are very helpful to review in the future)  Recruit

7 Duties of other offices (continued)  Treasurer  Coordinate and remind members of dues  Share fundraisers  Recruit  Reporter  Prepare newsletters  Write Press releases/media  Recruit  Parliamentarian  Advise president and chapter on correct business conduct (parliamentary procedure)  Recruit

8 Program of Work  What is a program of work?  Simply put: the goals and activities a chapter or organization plans to achieve!  Could include activities and goals related to:  Leadership development  Service opportunities  Professional development  (connections with business)  Financial management, including fundraising  Social activities  Important to a successful year!

9 SMART Goals  Specific  Don't be vague!  Set an EXACT goal to achieve  Who? What? Where? When? Why?  A stranger should be able to determine exactly what you want to achieve  Measurable  How can you see progress?  Find some way to see progress within the goal

10 Smart Goals (Continued)  Attainable  Identify goals that are important to you  Why set a goal that you have no interest in and is too big to achieve?  Reaching  Does the goal push you?  If the goal doesn't push you, go for something harder to achieve  Timely  Set a date to get the goal fully accomplished  If it is a large goal, set target dates for pieces of the goal  Accomplishing an open-ended goal is less likely

11 Goals need an Action Plan!  This goes back to the Specific in SMART Goals  What tasks need to be completed?  How will this goal be accomplished?  Who needs to do what?  When will each task happen?

Projects I am Overseeing  Add 5 event sponsors recruited by chapters  Establish a mentorship program Basic Plan  Developed a document simplifying the process to recruit a competitive event sponsor  Created and implemented the Mentorship Program (Guidelines/instructions, online form)

Projects I am Overseeing  Organize quiz bowl questions  Recognize chapters using communication technology tools Basic Plan  Created quiz bowl intructions/guidelines. Created a packet of 200+ quiz bowl questions relating to various topics  Created the StepUp2Tech Program, designed to catalyze use of communication technology

15 The Value of Social Media  Twitter  Facebook  Others!  Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, Tumblr, Buzznet, Dailybooth, Skype, Flickr, Foursquare, Blogs, Google+, LinkedIn, Myspace, YouTube, Orkut, ReverbNation, SoundCloud, StumbleUpon, Vimeo, Yammer, Yelp.....

16 DOs  #Hashtags  Use them! Make sure they make sense, though  Post relevant information!  Your readers want to know what is happening NOW  Don't post anything (uninteresting) that happened before the USA declared independence  Keep it short and sweet!  Nobody wants to read an essay!  Post in "traffic times"  Think about when you use social media the most  Times when you eat, right after school hours, Friday nights, etc.?

17 DON'Ts  #Hashtags  Don't overuse them  Post party pictures  Or any party posts for that matter!  Trash-talk an opponent or rival team  Actions off and on the field speak louder than words  "Walk the walk, don't talk the talk"  Bully or make threats towards another (be that a group or individual)  You shouldn't even do this in real life!  Bullying has no place in leaders' repertoire
