1. End of Key Stage One Assessments / SATs 1

2. SATs at KS1 SATs stands for ‘Standard Assessment Tasks’. They are provided by the Department of Education. At the end of Key Stage One levels are TEACHER ASSESSED. SATs materials are non-compulsory but are used to support Teacher Assessment. 2

3. General Information At the end of Key Stage One (Year Two) a level of attainment is reported to the LA. The judgement is based on the progress children have made throughout the year. Tests and tasks have been compiled to SUPPORT THE TEACHER’S JUDGEMENT on the level they assign your child. They are available to all schools in England. Children are assigned a level in Reading (including comprehension), Writing, Speaking & Listening, Maths and Science. 3

4. Levels National Average is Level 2B. Children receive a level between 1 and 3, (depending on ability). Levels are subdivided into A B and C. Level 2A is above average, level 2C is slightly below! Level 3 is operating well above average! 4

5. Assigning a Level and Ensuring Pupils Reach the Expected Level Termly assessments, (6 x yearly) allow us to track pupils progress and set targets. Targets are set using this assessment data and parents are informed during Parent’s Evening. These judgements are compiled using APP data. 5

6. Reading Reading is levelled using: Book Band Comprehension texts Quick recall of High Frequency Words Miscue analysis 6

7. Writing Assessment Each term pupils’ writing is assessed against a set criteria (see handout). Considerations when assigning a level are: Sentence structure/grammar Content Punctuation Layout Spelling Handwriting and presentation 7

8. Maths Levels are generated from assessment data collected throughout the year. Children will be assessed in the following National Curriculum areas (see handout): Number and Algebra & Handling Data (60%) Using and Applying (20%) Shape, Space and Measure (20%) 8

9. Maths … Additional evidence comes from the test materials provided by the Department of Education. Children will be entered in for the Level 2 or Level 3 paper (see handouts) depending on the data collected throughout the year. 9

10. Science Levels are generated from assessment data collected throughout the year. Children will be assessed in the following National Curriculum areas: Sc1 Scientific Enquiry (50%) Sc2 Life Processes and Living Things (16.7%) Sc3 Materials and their Properties (16.7%) Sc4 Physical Processes (16.7%) 10

11. Moderation We moderate internally as a staff and alongside our senior management team. We also moderate with other local Infant/Primary schools. Local Authority Moderators carry out moderations around the county (20% of schools). Year Three teachers are part of this process. 11

12. Considerations! The SATs materials are non-compulsory…. HOWEVER…they offer a useful and objective judgment which supports assessment data already collected by the class teacher. If a child under-performs on a test the teacher judgment (backed by the relevant evidence) stands. 12

13. Additional Considerations! Please note children who are assessed as working at Level 3 are operating at the lower end of this Level (3C). Level 4 is average for children at the end of KS2 (Year 6). Pupils are not given a Level 4 paper at KS1 as they have not covered the relevant programmes of study. No SATs week – assessments will take place during Summer Term 1. 13
