Subtractive Sculpture Oldest form of sculpture Involves REMOVING (subtracting) material such as stone or wood to create a finished work The most technically difficult form of sculpture; demand of time and the one of a kind results don’t allow for reproduction

Michelangelo Buonarroti Greatest stone sculptor ever known; Renaissance. Worked in marble; selected his blocks. Pre-visualize the form within the stone. He would began by striking the stone, knocking off great chunks, then used a rasp to roughly file off the stone. Finally he sanded and polished the image to perfection. “…Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” David 1504

Your goals… Designing in the Abstract –Inspired by biomorphic forms (shapes reminiscent of nature/living organisms) Subtractive Carving Process –Chipping/carving/removing/ filing away Interesting 360 degrees. –Aim for 60% (+ space) and 40% (- space)
